Adult English Class Writing Project: Our Cultural Traditions and Family Memories
In the introduction to the bilingual children’s book, Family Pictures, writer Sandra Cisneros says, “They say every picture tells a story. But the pictures of Carmen Lomas Garza tell many, many stories.” When the Level 2 adult English students in our Aprendamos Juntos (We Learn Together) family education program opened their copies of Lomas Garza’s book and were asked, “Which picture reminds you of home and why?,” they had stories to tell. Her evocative paintings sparked memories of visiting the local fair in Oaxaca, spending a lazy Sunday afternoon on a beach south of Acapulco, or picking oranges at a grandparents’ house in rural Honduras.

The class used the vignettes in Family Pictures as a jumping off point for telling and writing their own stories.

From Mexico to Burien: La Posada

Also in December, PLN partnered with The Highline Heritage Museum, City of Burien, Southwest Youth and Family Services and other sister organizations to plan and organize La Posada, a Mexican Christmas tradition reenacting Mary and Joseph’s journey to find shelter. Several Adult English students wrote about Las Posadas celebrations in their Mexican villages and towns, but said they didn’t have the opportunity to celebrate here. The Museum’s annual La Posada event aims to change that!

New Traditions: Sea Hawkers Latin American Club and Tres Lecheria Toy Drive
While many adult students wrote about customs practiced in their home countries, a few described new family holiday traditions celebrated in the United States. For several years, PLN has gathered holiday toys for participants in our programs. In the face of a pandemic that has devastated many families’ finances, it made sense to continue this new holiday tradition. Nationally renowned bakery, Tres Lecheria, partnered with us again this year. Then the Sea Hawkers Latin American booster club joined in, and we were able to make even more wishes come true.

Proyecto de escritura de la clase de inglés para adultos: Nuestras tradiciones culturales y recuerdos familiares.

En la introducción al libro bilingüe para niños, Family Pictures, la escritora Sandra Cisneros dice: “Dicen que cada imagen cuenta una historia. Pero las fotos de Carmen Lomas Garza cuentan muchas, muchas historias ”. Cuando los estudiantes adultos de inglés de Nivel 2 en nuestro programa de educación familiar Aprendamos Juntos (Aprendemos juntos) abrieron sus copias del libro de Lomas Garza y se les preguntó: “¿Qué imagen te recuerda a tu hogar y por qué?”, Tenían historias que contar. Sus pinturas evocadoras despertaron recuerdos de visitar la feria local en Oaxaca, pasar una tarde de domingo tranquila en una playa al sur de Acapulco o recoger naranjas en la casa de los abuelos en una zona rural de Honduras.

En respuesta a la pregunta, “¿Qué tradición cultural o recuerdo familiar quieres compartir con tus hijos?” Algunos estudiantes adultos escribieron sobre tradiciones esparcidas por toda América Latina, como el Día de los Muertos o Las Posadas, mientras que otros describieron celebraciones culturales específicas de una región, como la hermosa celebración de La Rama de Veracruz, en la que los niños encuentran y decoran una rama, luego viajar de casa en casa tocando música y cantando a cambio de pequeños obsequios en efectivo. Otros escribieron sobre tradiciones familiares personales, como los cumpleaños de los abuelos, que se celebraban con solo un día de diferencia cada diciembre, ¡lo que le da a la familia del estudiante una razón para organizar una fiesta anual que dura dos días completos!

Cohorte Piloto de Promotoras de Salud: Listas para servir

“(Agradezco) el conocimiento que adquirimos sobre la cultura y la personalidad, ya que esto me ayudará a realizar mi trabajo como promotora en la organización y en mi comunidad”. – Participante en la cohorte piloto de Promotoras de Salud de Para Los Niños.

Cuando los padres líderes en Para Los Niños recomendaron que iniciemos un proyecto de Promotoras de Salud (Trabajadoras de Salud Comunitaria) para responder a la pandemia de COVID-19, todos estábamos de acuerdo. Ya habíamos estado patrocinando clínicas de vacunas y mesas de recursos, pero necesitábamos la capacidad de profundizar en nuestra comunidad para contrarrestar la desinformación sobre el virus y la vacuna. De agosto a noviembre de 2021, seis miembros latinas de PLN (incluidas tres graduadas de la Academia de Liderazgo) participaron en 20 horas de capacitación para profundizar en la comunidad latina del sur del condado de King con recursos de prevención de COVID-19, información precisa sobre vacunas y más.

Promotoras de Salud es un modelo latinoamericano de educación para la salud comunitaria que se ha adoptado con éxito en comunidades de los Estados Unidos. El modelo centra las experiencias vividas de los educadores laicos, principalmente mujeres, para conectarse con las comunidades de habla hispana a menudo descuidadas por los proveedores de atención médica convencionales. PLN se asoció con el Departamento de Salud del Condado de King y la Red de Promotores del Condado de King para diseñar y dirigir cuatro sesiones de capacitación con temas que van desde la vacuna COVID19 y los conceptos básicos de las pruebas hasta las manifestaciones visibles e invisibles de la cultura.

Pilot Promotoras de Salud Cohort: Ready to Serve

When parent leaders at Para Los Niños recommended that we start a Promotoras de Salud (community health outreach worker) project to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were all in. We had already been sponsoring vaccine clinics and resource tables, but we needed the capacity to reach deeper into our community to counter the misinformation about the virus and the vaccine. From August to November, 2021, six Latina PLN members (including three Leadership Academy graduates), participated in 20 hours of training to reach deep into the South King County Latino community with COVID-19 prevention resources, accurate vaccine information, and more.

Promotoras de Salud is a Latin American community health education model that has been successfully adopted in communities across the United States. The model centers the lived experiences of lay educators – primarily women – to connect with Spanish speaking communities often neglected by mainstream health care providers. PLN partnered with the King County Health Department and the King County Promotores Network to design and lead four training sessions with topics ranging from COVID19 vaccine and testing basics to visible and invisible manifestations of culture.

The sessions on community leadership models and definitions of racial equity were popular with participants. One new promotora pointed to “the opportunity to share experiences to better understand the concepts (of racial equity)” as a personal highlight, while another praised the participatory training methods for increasing her confidence and knowledge of her new role.

As the Omicron variant has begun to spread, PLN is grateful we can support our six trusted and trained promotoras de salud to meet our Latino families where they are at to stop the spread of COVID19 in our community.

We’re thrilled to announce our 2021 Virtual Gala keynote speaker is Dr. Lonnie Tristan Renteria (he/him/they/them), Lonnie has continued Puentes’ founder Maria Jose Cote’s vision of making accessible mental health interventions available to immigrant communities. He is both a therapist and educator. His education and experience cover a broad range of subjects that inform his practice, from cultural theory, literature, narrative theory, to positive and forensic psychology. He is a current member of the American Psychological Association, American Counseling Association, Washington Mental Health Counselors Association, and The Global Center for Forensic Research.

We are also excited to also announce Doris Castro, a community leader, a graduate of PLN’s Academia de Liderazgo and an active Para Los Niños program participant will be our featured family at this year’s virtual gala. Doris is from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, works with the elderly and children, she is a mother, wife, and advocate for her family and community.

Tickets will be available on October 11th, 2021, mark your calendars and get ready to celebrate all the great work we have accomplished ¡UNIDOS!

About the Mural and Artist:

Thanks to 4 Culture, Para Los Niños invited local artist Amaranta Ibrra-Sandys to work with our PLN Latinx Youth participants on a mural art project. The mural project consisted of a 3 part series in-person and via Zoom.

Art is of great importance to our community and this summer we have been able to create captivating murals at our Para Los Niños office. Our third virtual unveil is by artist Raquel García Martínez.

About the Mural and Artist:

Raquel García Martínez was born and raised in the border town of Tijuana Baja California, Mexico.Exposure to the beautiful indigenous and regional art styles from all over the country was an important factor in her love for painting.

Raquel is a self-taught painter who enjoys portraying her culture through bright and folkloric decorative shadow boxes also known as “Nichos.” She has a special interest in utilizing recycled materials as well as rescued or repurposed wooden items and furniture. Her main medium is acrylic paint however Raquel is also an avid sketch artist with pencil and graphite.

Raquel García Martínez nació y crecio en la ciudad fronteriza de Tijuana Baja California, México. La exposición a los hermosos estilos artísticos indígenas y regionales de todo el país fue un factor importante en su amor por la pintura.

Raquel es una pintora autodidacta que disfruta retratar su cultura a través de cajas de sombras decorativas brillantes y folclóricas, también conocidas como “Nichos”. Tiene un interés especial en utilizar materiales reciclados, así como en muebles y artículos de madera rescatados o reutilizados. Su medio principal es la pintura acrílica, sin embargo, Raquel también es una ávida dibujante con lápiz y grafito.

Open House 2021

In July we had our first Open House followed by our second in August. Guests enjoyed a tour of our new offices, traditional appetizers, a silent auction, a resource table (with current information on our programs) with free books and prizes, and the unveiling of our 4 new murals. They were able to learn more about our programs by talking to staff, volunteer community members, and volunteer Madrinas.

Community Vaccine Fairs

We had two free COVID-19 vaccine fairs in July and August in collaboration with Public Health – Seattle & King County. Community members could pick which vaccine they wanted (Pfizer, J&J, Moderna) and received a gift card and two swag bags, one of them was provided by Molina Healthcare and the other by Public Health – Seattle & King County. King County was so excited about our great turnout at both events that we will be hosting a third one on September 9th, 10am-2pm.

Summer Resource Fair 2021

Para Los Niños held its second Summer Resource Fair for our community in front of our new office in downtown Burien. We wanted to continue the spirit of our summer programs, Descubriendo Nuestra Cultura (Discovering Our Culture) and Alrededor del Mundo (Around the World). Read more here!

Ferias Comunitarias de Vacunas

Tuvimos dos ferias gratuitas de vacunas COVID-19 el mes de Julio y Agosto en colaboración con Salud Pública Seattle y el Condado de King. Los miembros de la comunidad escogieron qué vacuna querían (Pfizer, J&J, Moderna) y recibieron una tarjeta de regalo y dos bolsas con regalos, proporcionados por Molina Healthcare y por Public Health – Seattle & King County. El condado de King estaba tan emocionado con nuestra participación y resultados en ambos eventos que organizaremos un tercero el 9 de septiembre de 10 AM a 2 PM.

New Mural by Amaranta Sandys

Welcome back to the virtual unveiling of our 4 new murals. We invite you to come and visit our new murals (3 of them are outside and can be viewed at any time). Art is of great importance to our community and this summer we have been able to create captivating murals at our Para Los Niños office. Our second virtual unveil is by South Seattle-based Mixed Media Artist and Teaching Artist Amaranta Sandys.

About the Mural and Artist:

Amaranta Sandys was born and raised in Mexico City. In 2000 she returned back to Seattle after finishing her degree in Ceramics and Folk Mexican Art at Instituto Nacional de Bellas (INBA). In 2013, through Latino Ventures Business, she launched with great success ArtMaranth Mobile School.

Her art programs now are offered virtually at libraries, schools, and community centers serving underrepresented youth, young mothers, and families around King County. Over the last 17 years, she has ventured into new artistic territories: curating art exhibitions, mentoring murals with youth, poster commission, public art, volunteering, and advocating for accessible Arts Education.

Her artwork has been inspired by social change, nature, cycles, and ancestral rituals. “My illustrations depict personal visual narratives through bright colors, bold lines & textures.” She portrayed people’s struggles and awareness from indigenous rights, racial social justice, equity, diversity, and pure joy. Women are connected to the mind and heart. Through her artistic practice, she tries to find balance in creative spaces, urban life, and family time. She uses acrylics, clay, vintage maps, watercolor pencils, and found objects

El arte es de gran importancia para nuestra comunidad y este verano hemos podido crear bellísimas obras en nuestra oficina de Para Los Niños. Nuestra segunda presentación virtual es de la artista de medios mixtos y artista docente Amaranta Sandys, del sur de Seattle.

Más Sobre el Mural y Artista:

Amaranta Sandys nació y creció en la Ciudad de México. En el año 2000 regresó a Seattle después de terminar su licenciatura en Cerámica y Arte Popular Mexicano, en el Instituto Nacional de Bellas (INBA). En el año 2013, a través de Latino Ventures Business, lanzó con gran éxito ArtMaranth Mobile School.

Sus programas de arte ahora se ofrecen virtualmente en bibliotecas, escuelas y centros comunitarios que sirven a jóvenes que tradicionalmente no son representados adecuadamente, madres jóvenes y familias en todo el condado de King. Durante los últimos 17 años, se ha aventurado en nuevos territorios artísticos: curadora de exposiciones de arte, tutoría de murales con jóvenes, realiza carteles, arte público, voluntariado y defensa de la educación artística accesible.

Su obra de arte se ha inspirado en el cambio social, la naturaleza, los ciclos y los rituales ancestrales. “Mis ilustraciones representan narrativas visuales personales a través de colores brillantes, líneas y texturas llamativas. “Programando Nuestro Futuro” New Mural

About the Mural:

“This mural depicts four young Latinas using their knowledge to create technology that will help our community address important problems. This drawing is inspired by a team of young Latinas who participated in the European Girls Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI), the first international programming competition for girls. The names of these girls are Maeva, Fernanda, Cynthia, and Ariel. Cynthia and Ari won a Silver and a Bronze medal, respectively (EGOI results). From the very moment I was commissioned this mural by Virginia, the Executive Director of Para Los Niños, I knew that I was going to draw young Latinxs creating technology with a special focus on depicting people of color. This was only natural to me as I am passionate about STEM Education. At the same time that I was thinking about the perfect idea for my artwork, I was following the adventures of Maeva, Fernanda, Cynthia, and Ariel, thanks to the fact that I serve as a Board Member at omegaUp the Educational Platform that organizes the Olympiad for Girls in Mexico. Then everything connected in my mind and I had the perfect idea for my artwork! This is the original sketch on my artist page. I am very inspired by the hard work that students have done and all the knowledge that they have accumulated, and not only the four Latinas depicted on my mural, but every single student who is working every day to learn more and more, also I’m very proud of knowing that Latinas are representing our community in such important events and demonstrating what we are made of creativity, hard work, passion for solving abstract problems with whatever tools we have. I hope this mural inspires young Latinxs to continue solving problems (as we all do every single day) and to adventure themselves in STEM Education and in a few years start creating technology that will greatly benefit our community! I am grateful to Para Los Niños for the opportunity to share my artwork with my community. Thank you!”

About the Artist:

“Education changed Rafa Díaz’s life. Now he works towards the democratization of education and is a strong advocate of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Rafa is the artist known as “rcxr” who uses his artwork to create positive conversations about social justice, anti-racism, DE&I, and to visibilize BIPOC in visual spaces. Rafa has donated his work to help advance the mission of Washington nonprofits. Rafa grew up in “La Guerrero” in Mexico City. When he was 12 he started working to support his family. He worked as a delivery boy, at printing workshops, as a waiter, and as a general employee at Burger King and Costco. Thanks to the support of his mom, sisters, and the whole community, Rafa never gave up on education and earned multiple awards in Mathematical Olympiads at National and International levels, and was able to complete his BS in Computer Science. Rafa moved to Seattle to work as a software engineer. Rafa also serves as a Director at omegaUp, a nonprofit organization with the mission of building the talent pipeline of Software Engineers in the Latinx Community by providing an educational platform together with social programs.”

“Programando Nuestro Futuro” Nuevo Mural

El arte es de gran importancia para nuestra comunidad y este verano hemos podido crear bellísimas obras en nuestra oficina de Para Los Niños. ¡Tenemos nuevos murales! Ven a visitarlos a cualquier hora del día (3 de ellos se encuentran fuera). Comenzamos a develar virtualmente, el primero llamado “Programando Nuestro Futuro” de el artista rcxr (Rafa Díaz).

Mas Sobre el Mural:

La educación cambió la vida de Rafa. Actualmente él trabaja por democratizar el acceso a la educación y es un fuerte defensor de la diversidad, equidad e inclusión. Rafa es un artista conocido como “rcxr” quien usa su arte para crear conversaciones positivas en torno a justicia social, anti-racismo, diversidad, equidad, inclusión y para visualizar a personas de color en espacios visuales. Rafa ha donado su trabajo para apoyar a organizaciones sin fines de lucro en Washington. Rafa creció en “La Guerrero” y en la Ciudad de México. Cuando tenía 12 años comenzó a trabajar para ayudar a su familia. Algunos de los trabajos que realizó fueron mensajero en talleres de impresión, mesero, empleado general en Costco y Burger King. Gracias a la ayuda de su mamá, sus hermanas y su comunidad Rafa nunca se dio por vencido y pudo ganar múltiples reconocimientos en la Olimpiada Mexicana de Matemáticas a nivel nacional e internacional y pudo completar una carrera de ingeniería en ciencias computacionales. Rafa se mudó a Seattle para trabajar como ingeniero de software. Rafa también sirve como director en omegaUp, una organización sin fines de lucro cuya misión es construir la plataforma de ingenierxs de software en la comunidad Latina a través de ofrecer una plataforma educativa junto con programas sociales.

Mas Sobre el Artista:

Este mural representa a cuatro niñas latinas que usan su conocimiento para crear tecnología que ayude a nuestra comunidad a resolver importantes problemas. Este dibujo fue inspirado en un grupo de niñas latinas que participaron en la Olimpiada Europea de Informática Femenil (EGOI), la primera competencia internacional de programación para niñas. Los nombres de estas estudiantes son; Maeva, Fernanda, Cynthia y Ariel. Cynthia y Ariel ganaron medallas de plata y bronce respectivamente (resultados de la EGOI) Desde que Virginia, la Directora Ejecutiva de Para Los Niños, me pidió colaborar con este mural yo sabía que iba a dibujar niños estudiantes latinos creando tecnología con un enfoque especial en representar a niños de color. Esto fue algo natural para mí ya que me apasiona la educación en ciencias, tecnología, ingenierías y matemáticas. Al mismo tiempo que pensaba en la idea perfecta para mi mural seguía la aventura de Maeva, Fernanda, Cynthia y Ariel en la EGOI gracias al hecho de que soy director en omegaUp la nonprofit que organiza la Olimpiada Femenil de Informática en México. Así todo se conectó en mi mente y se me ocurrió la idea perfecta: cuatro niñas programando. Este es el boceto original. El duro trabajo que las estudiantes han hecho y todo el conocimiento que adquirieron me inspira mucho. Y no hablo solamente de las niñas representadas en mi mural, si no de cada una de los estudiantes que trabajan día con día en aprender más y más, también me llena de orgullo saber que ellas representan a nuestra comunidad en tan importante evento, demostrando de lo que estamos hechxs: trabajo duro, pasión en resolver problemas abstractos con cualquier herramienta que tengamos a la mano. Espero que este mural inspire a niños y jóvenes Latinxs a seguir resolviendo problemas (como lo han hecho día a día) y a aventurarse en la educación en ciencias, tecnologías, ingenierías y matemáticas y que en algunos años creen tecnología que beneficiará enormemente a nuestra comunidad. ¡Muchas gracias a Para Los Niños por la oportunidad de compartir mi arte con mi comunidad!

Summer Resource Fair 2021

Families received school and art supplies, sports equipment, and several books from different Latin American writers. In addition to this, our gift bags included board games for the whole family and health kits courtesy of Molina Healthcare. During the event, families got to enjoy some refreshments courtesy of Taquería Casa Mixteca, salsa music and entered a raffle for one of the 15 bikes donated by Bike Works. Our partners at Public Health – Seattle & King County joined our event and offered free COVID-19 Vaccines (Pfizer, J&J, Moderna).

Feria de Recursos Verano 2021

Para Los Niños celebró su segunda Feria de Recursos de Verano para nuestra comunidad a frente a nuestra nueva oficina en el centro de Burien. Queríamos continuar con el espíritu de nuestros programas de verano, Descubriendo Nuestra Cultura y Alrededor del Mundo.

Las familias recibieron útiles escolares y artísticos, equipamiento deportivo y varios libros de diferentes escritores latinoamericanos. Además de esto, nuestras bolsas de regalo incluían juegos de mesa para toda la familia y paquetes de cortesía con productos de salud de Molina Healthcare. Durante el evento, las familias pudieron disfrutar de refrescos cortesía de Taquería Casa Mixteca, música salsa y participaron en el sorteo de las 15 bicicletas donadas por Bike Works. Nuestros aliados de Salud Pública – Seattle y el Condado de King se unieron a nuestro evento y ofrecieron vacunas COVID-19 gratuitas (Pfizer, J&J, Moderna).

Community Vaccine Fair – July 2021

We had a free COVID-19 vaccine fair last month in collaboration with Public Health – Seattle & King County. Community members could pick which vaccine they wanted (Pfizer, J&J, Moderna) and received a gift card and two swag bags one of them was provided by Molina Healthcare and the other by Public Health – Seattle & King County. We had a great turnout and will be hosting another one on August 19 from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Tuvimos una feria gratuita de vacunas COVID-19 el mes pasado en colaboración con Salud Pública – Seattle y el Condado de King. Los miembros de la comunidad escogieron qué vacuna querían (Pfizer, J&J, Moderna) y recibieron una tarjeta de regalo y dos bolsas de regalos, una de ellas fue proporcionada por Molina Healthcare y la otra por Public Health – Seattle & King County. Tuvimos una gran participación y organizaremos una más el día 19 de agosto este mes, de 10 AM a 2 PM.

OPEN HOUSE JULY 2021

Earlier this month we had our first Open House. Guests enjoyed a tour of our new offices, traditional appetizers, drinks, a silent auction, and the unveiling of our 4 new murals. They were able to learn more about our programs by talking to staff and volunteer community members. We were joined by two of the mural artists – Raquel García Martínez and Rafa Díaz, our interim president Bevin Taylor, Madrinas, Padrinos and friends of PLN.

A principios de este mes tuvimos nuestra primera Open House. Los invitados disfrutaron de un recorrido por nuestras nuevas oficinas, aperitivos tradicionales, bebidas, una subasta y la presentación de nuestros 4 nuevos murales. Pudieron aprender más sobre nuestros programas hablando con el personal y los miembros voluntarios de la comunidad. Nos acompañaron dos de los artistas murales: Raquel García Martínez y Rafa Díaz, nuestro presidente interino Bevin Taylor, Madrinas, Padrinos y amigos de PLN.

Board Update

Since 2013 Roxana Pardo Garcia has served on the Board of Directors for Para los Niños. In 2019 she was appointed Board Chair, Roxana has dedicated over 8 years of service to PLN and the Latinx Community. We want to thank Roxana and wish her the best on her new journey as she steps away from her position as Board Chair and a Board member.

Our Executive Director Virginia Herrera-Páramo wants to thank Roxana for her participation, support, commitment, and leadership she provided PLN since 2013.

“Dear Para los Niños Community,

¡Hola familia! I hope this finds you in high spirits and in good health. I am writing this note to share that effective June 18^th, I will be stepping down from my role as Board Chair and from the Board of Directors of Para los Niños.

I have served this agency in this capacity for 8 years – I joined in 2013 shortly after concluding my undergraduate journey and looking to return to serve my Community. I appreciate PLN taking a chance on me; for opening their doors to a young professional and teaching me so much along the way.

I have seen PLN grow – immensely, in these past 8 years. I have seen the staff grow, the physical space of the organization grow, and impact in Community grow. I am forever grateful to the memories, the lessons, and for the relationships cultivated.

And like all journeys, they come to an end! 8 years is a long time (almost half the life of PLN!) and its time I step aside so that new leadership can flourish. I am proud of PLN – the staff and the board – as we have challenged ourselves to grow, to invest in our learning so we can do and be better for our community. I leave PLN in good hands.

While I leave the PLN board, I will not be leaving PLN or the Community. If anything, I will just be transforming into a partner of PLN so we can continue the great work of serving our comunidad. For us by us.

“Estimada comunidad de Para los Niños,

¡Hola familia! Espero que esta carta los encuentre bien y con buena salud. Estoy escribiendo esta carta para compartir que a partir del 18 de Junio, dejaré mi cargo como presidente de la junta y de la junta directiva de Para los Niños.

He servido en esta agencia en esta capacidad durante 8 años; me uní en 2013 poco después de concluir mi viaje de la Universidad y buscando servir a mi comunidad. Agradezco que PLN me dio una oportunidad; por abrir sus puertas a un joven profesional y enseñarme tanto en el camino.

He visto crecer a PLN, inmensamente, en estos últimos 8 años. He visto crecer al personal, crecer el espacio físico de la organización y el impacto que tienen en la comunidad. Siempre estaré agradecido por los recuerdos, las lecciones y las relaciones cultivadas.

¡Y como todos los viajes, llegan a su fin! 8 años es mucho tiempo (¡casi la mitad de la vida de PLN!) Y es hora de que me haga a un lado para que pueda florecer un nuevo liderazgo.

Estoy orgulloso de PLN, el personal y la junta, ya que nos hemos desafiado a nosotros mismos a crecer, a invertir en nuestro aprendizaje para que podamos mejorar y ser mejores para nuestra comunidad. Dejo PLN en buenas manos.

Happy Pride Month 2021

Pride Month in June first started to celebrate the Stonewall Rebellion – protests in response to police brutality on 28 June 1969 which paved the way to the LGBTQ+ rights movement. A year later, on 28 June 1970, the first-ever Pride parade took place in New York City. It also celebrates all the protests and battles fought by LGBTQ+ activists, members, and allies all over the world via the LGBTQ+ rights movement. (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and other identities). Thanks to the LGBTQ+ rights movement in Latinx countries there is now more and more acceptance and openness for the LGBTQIA+ community.

El Mes del Orgullo LGBTQ+ en junio comenzó por primera vez para celebrar la Rebelión de Stonewall: protestas en respuesta a la brutalidad policial del 28 de junio de 1969, que comenzó el camino hacia el movimiento de derechos LGBTQ+. Awards

We are excited to have earned a Community Leadership Award at the Washington Association of School Administrators 2020-2021 Region 110 Honorary Awards. Thank you to Highline Public Schools for nominating us and continuing to support us. Special thanks to our volunteers and staff who worked tirelessly during the pandemic to ensure families were able to continue our programs and have access to emergency services.

Volunteering

Our community volunteers held tabling events weekly at three different locations – The Burien Farmers Market, outside of the PLN offices, and La Canasta Food market. They provided information on COVID-19, COVID-19 Vaccines/sites, and our PLN programs. Hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes, face masks, art supplies, and stress management tools were available to families. Thanks to our four volunteers who continue to empower the community.

GiveBIG 2021

We surpassed our goal of 5k raising $14,216. We wanted to thank everyone for your support during the GiveBIG 2021 campaign. Thank you to all our donors, padrinos, madrinas, anonymous donors, community members and those who provided matching funds.

Latinx Youth Program

Thanks to 4 Culture, Para Los Niños invited local artist Amaranta Ibrra-Sandys to work with our program participants on a mural art project. The mural project consisted of a 3 part series in-person and via Zoom. While speaking to Edith who is part of the Latinx Youth program, she had this to say “My favorite part of the mural project was getting to meet new people and socializing with the other PNL members. Something I learned is that you can take such powerful words or ideas and make art out of them. Meaning, that a butterfly and a pencil can mean so much while looking beautiful.”

Creating Community Leaders / Empowering Parents

Our Academia de Liderazgo (Leadership Academy) class of 2021 is graduating next month. Since January 2021 participants have learned new skills, broadened their networks, and are prepared for activism outside of PLN. Participants reflected on their experiences and shared some takeaways:

“Through what I learned I have been able to pass on lessons to my children and others in the community. Having reflections and sharing with the community has helped my life.” R.G

“I have learned we have the opportunities to help others. We heard stories from others in the community who were able to make a difference with no resources, which has inspired me. We obtained information we didn’t have and now we also have a support system within PLN. I know we can do it!” D.C

“I learned a lot. One of my favorites was the session on learning about the school system and meeting Superintendent Susan Enfield from Highline Public schools. My second favorite was the open dialogue we had which helped me see different perspectives.” M.A

PLN en la Comunidad

Premios

Estamos muy contentos de haber ganado un Premio al Liderazgo Comunitario, los Premios Honorarios de la Región 110 de la Asociación de Administradores Escolares de Washington 2020-2021. Gracias a las Escuelas Públicas de Highline por nominarnos y continuar apoyándonos. Un agradecimiento especial a nuestros voluntarios y el personal de PLN que trabajaron duro durante la pandemia para garantizar que las familias pudieran continuar con nuestros programas y tener acceso a los servicios de emergencia.

Voluntarios

Nuestros voluntarios de la comunidad realizaron eventos semanalmente en tres lugares diferentes: el mercado de Burien, fuera nuestras oficina de PLN y el mercado de alimentos La Canasta. Programa de Jóvenes Latinx

Gracias a 4 CUlture tuvimos la oportunidad de invitar a la artista local Amaranta Ibrra-Sandys a trabajar con los participantes de nuestro Programa de jovenes Latinx, en un proyecto de arte mural. El proyecto del mural consistió en una serie de 3 partes en persona y a través de Zoom. Edith, que forma parte del Programa de jóvenes, comentó: “Mi parte favorita del proyecto fue conocer gente nueva y socializar con los otros miembros de la PNL. Algo que aprendí es que puedes tomar palabras o ideas muy poderosas y hacer arte con ellas. Es decir, que una mariposa y un lápiz pueden significar mucho más y reflejar cosas hermosas”.

Creando Líderes Comunitarios / Empoderando a los Padres

Nuestro Programa de Academia de Liderazgo del 2021 se graduará el próximo mes.

Desde enero de 2021, los participantes han aprendido nuevas habilidades, han ampliado sus redes y se están preparando para el activismo afuera de PLN. Los participantes reflexionaron sobre sus experiencias:

“A través de lo que aprendí, he podido transmitir lecciones a mis hijos y a otras personas de la comunidad. Tener reflexiones y compartir con la comunidad me ha ayudado en la vida ”. R.G

“He aprendido que tenemos la oportunidad de ayudar a otros. Escuchamos historias de otras personas en la comunidad que pudieron hacer la diferencia sin recursos y me han inspirado. Obtuvimos información que no teníamos y ahora también tenemos un sistema de apoyo dentro de PLN. ¡Sé que podemos hacerlo!” D.C

We wanted to thank everyone for your support during the GiveBIG 2021 campaign. Thank you to all our donors, padrinos, madrinas, anonymous donors, and those who provided matching funds. Thanks to supporters like you, we have been able to reach our goal of $5,000 – we raised $14,011.

We are grateful to all our staff, supporters, Board of Directors, and community participants that let us interview them for social media to help us spread the word and increase visibility for our organization. This was a team effort!

From 1,684 organizations that participated in the GiveBig event, we are proud to be #208 on the Washington State leaderboard and #180 on the King County leaderboard. Because of your donations, we can continue our effort in continuing our programs while distributing art supplies, gift cards, cultural board games, school supplies, and culturally relevant food.

Thank you to Arcora Foundation who donated dental kits to Para Los Niños and also to our anonymous donor who donated hand sanitizers. We have been able to create kits for families thanks to those organizations that include hand sanitizers, a stress ball, face masks and dental hygiene kits.
We would also like to thank King County for their long-time partnership with Para Los Niños and for their continuous donations of hand sanitizers and face masks.

Para Los Niños and UW Work with Parents

Para Los Niños has partnered with the University of Washington to “promote young children’s ability to self-regulate through parenting strategies that contribute to children’s positive development.” This is done through a parenting program called SEACAP: Social, Emotional, and Academic Competence for Children and Parents.
Para Los Niños is one of the first organizations to use this program virtually with parents from our programs.
Throughout six sessions, parents will gain skills to manage their own stress and emotions to continue supporting their children. With positive affirmations and tips on how to be present, we are providing essential tools to parents.
At the end of every session, they receive resources and information from local lawyers surround important topics that affect the Latinx community such as immigration rights, accessibility in the education system, and more.

Gracias a la Fundación Arcora que donó kits dentales productos de higiene dental a Para Los Niños, tambien agradecemos al donador anónimo que nos regalo desinfectantes para manos. Hemos creado bolsitas para familias gracias a aquellas organizaciones que incluyen desinfectantes de manos, una pelota antiestrés, mascarillas faciales y paquetes de higiene dental.
También nos gustaría agradecer al Condado de King por su continuo apoyo a Para Los Niños mediante la donación de muchos desinfectantes para manos y mascarillas faciales.

Para Los Niños esta colaborando con la Universidad de Washington para “promover la capacidad de los niños pequeños para autorregularse a través de estrategias de crianza que contribuyan al desarrollo positivo de los niños”. Connecting with the community

On February 4th, we invited members of our community to meet with Para Los Niños staff and learn more about the programs we offer. We connected with over 100 attendees on Zoom and held break-out sessions to get more feedback about what they would like to see. We are hoping to host more of these sessions in a virtual capacity to maintain the sense of community we are known for. Gracias to all who participated!

Virtual Classes

Our Aprendamos Juntos program for 1st to 3rd grade, 4th to 6th, and 7th to 8th grade continues to focus on the educational needs of the students. Our other programs, such as the adult English classes and Play and Learn also continue virtually.

Our virtual computer classes began this past week. Our Computer Lab Assistant is working directly with the community to build classes based on what participants need to address the great inequities in technology access for the Latino community.

Nos conectamos con más de 100 asistentes en Zoom y realizamos sesiones de trabajo para obtener más comentarios sobre lo que les gustaría ver. Clases virtuales

Black History Month

“In 1926, Dr. Woodson initiated the celebration of Negro History Week, which corresponded with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.“

While Black History Month is celebrated officially throughout February, it should be an every-day effort to uplift Black voices and celebrate Black stories. It’s also important to acknowledge that both the United States and Latin America have a history of overlooking the achievements of Black folks. Because of this, we will be highlighting stories of some prominent Afro-Latinx figures. But first, it’s we go back to the beginning and learn about the start of what is now known as Black History Month.

The story of Black History Month begins back in 1915 thanks in part to a man named Carter G. Woodson. That year, Dr. Woodson, a history professor helped establish the group that is now called the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History (ASALH) to study Black culture and history and promote the accomplishment and studies of Black folks.

In the years that followed, several cities around the United States began to recognize the week-long holiday. It wasn’t until until 1976 that then US President Gerald Ford officially extended and federally recognized the holiday to “honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Since 1976, every Black History Month has focused on celebrating the often erased contributions and lived experiences of the Black community with a theme. This year’s theme is “Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity,” exploring the African diaspora, and the spread of Black families across the United States.

The Northwest African American Museum* is a great resource located in Downtown Seattle and has programming throughout the year to further educate people about Black history. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they have shifted to virtual programming — visit their website to learn more about their programs.

*At the time of this writing this, February 2021, the museum is closed due to COVID-19.

Febrero es el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana

Si bien el Mes de la Historia Afro-Americana se celebra oficialmente en febrero, debería ser un esfuerzo diario para elevar las voces negras y celebrar las historias Afroamericanas. También es importante reconocer que tanto los Estados Unidos como América Latina historicamente han dejado pasar por alto los logros de las comunidades negras. Debido a esto, destacaremos historias de algunas figuras prominentes afrolatinx. Pero primero, aprendemos sobre el comienzo de lo que ahora se conoce como el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana.

Wrapping up 2020

We ended the year by providing the families registered in our programs with presents for the holidays thanks to Tres Lecheria, Colores Spanish Immersion Pre-School, and Imperial Court of Seattle and the Olympic and Rainier Empire. Additionally, to fight the technological inequities seen within our community, and thanks to King County, we distributed 119 laptop to adults and provided them with tutorials to learn how to navigate the ever-changing virtual landscape.

Where we’re going in 2021

Our Latinx Youth Program will be providing a limited number of internships in 2021 to assist students with their desired skills and objectives to best prepare them for their post-high school plan. Play & Learn and Aprendamos Juntos (Let’s Learn Together) has continued virtually, while Academia de Liderazgo (Leadership Academy) is beginning its virtual meetings to provide leadership development to our adult community members. Next month, there will be a networking event for participants and the Para Los Niños staff. Our Computer Lab will resume its classes soon.
Plus, now’s the best time to become a part of our monthly giving program, Madrinas and Padrinos, as our donor appreciation program is launching this year.

Celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today, and every day, we honor the life and legacy of civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. He was born on January 15, 1929 but it is celebrated as a federal holiday every third Monday in January.

Martin Luther King, Jr., dedicated his life to fighting racism and achieving racial equality and justice for African Americans. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his work.

According to Nobel Prize website, “In the eleven-year period between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action; and meanwhile he wrote five books as well as numerous articles.“

In 1963, King was arrested in Birmingham, Alabama after several days boycotts, sit-ins, and marches to protest racial injustices. There, he penned his famous letter, “A Letter from Birmingham Jail,” where he said, “One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” Two years later, he and his wife, Coretta Scott King, led thousands of demonstrators from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery — a historic 54-mile march. That same year, in 1963, he led the March on Washington where he delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. In 1968, King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.

We honor Martin Luther King, Jr’s life and legacy by continuing to fight for racial equality and bringing to light the systemic inequities seen in our communities. We must do the work by reflecting the ways in which we, as individuals and community, participate in the perpetuation of negative views against Black people, who are also part of our Black Latinx community. Let’s work on making our community a safer and inclusive place for everyone regardless of skin color.

Keep yourself and your loved ones safe from COVID-19

As we enter the new year, it’s important to continue to take care of ourselves and our loved ones. Here are some tips:

Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth and fits snugly
Always wear a mask in public places and around people who do not live with you
Wash your hands frequently
When soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer
If you feel unwell, stay home, and if your discomfort continues, talk to your doctor

Toy Drive 2020

We want to thank Tres Lecheria, Colores Spanish Immersion Pre-School, and The Imperial Sovereign Court of Seattle and the Olympic and Rainier Empire (ISCSORE) for their partnership during this year’s toy drive.

This year, we were able to assist the families registered in our programs by providing toys to their children between the ages of 6 months to 18 years old. Now, more than ever, it’s important for children to have toys to keep their spirits high as we continue to navigate these unprecedented times.

The Tres Lecheria has partnered with Para Los Niños for several years to host a toy drive for our families. While this was ISCSORE’s and Colors Spanish Immersion Pre-School’s first year participating, we are grateful for their support.

Tres Lechería ha colaborado con Para Los Niños durante varios años para organizar una colecta de juguetes para nuestras familias. Este fue el primer año de colaboración con ISCSORE y Colors Spanish Immersion Pre-School.

The Work We Do

Thanks to your support, we were able to raise $42,839.81 during our first-ever virtual gala!

This year, Para Los Niños underwent plenty of unforeseen challenges due to COVID-19 pandemic but, despite this, we pushed forward.
We have continued our programs, created new ones, and have provided resources to the community.
It has been a trying year but through out it all, we have continued floreciendo.
Thank you to the many community members that have been working with us during these difficult times by volunteering their time, and lending us their skills, strength, and knowledge.
Our ability to confront this unprecedented time through partnership has brought us closer together and has shown us the strength of community.

During this time, ofrendas (altars) will be available for viewing throughout Downtown Burien. Every night from 6 PM to 8 PM, the ofrendas will be illuminated.

These classes will start will cover topics depending on what each person needs. Attendees can ask any questions or concerns they have surrounding technology.

Our Computer Lab assistant, Citlaly will be covering topics from how to send an email, create an email, navigate any video conference platforms, troubleshooting, and more.

There are limited spots for these classes as they will take place in person. We will be following social distancing procedures to ensure the safety of the community and our staff.

Latinx Art Exhibition on display – UPDATED November 2020

Para Los Niños is excited to have partnered with Highline Heritage Museum and the City of Burien to create the Latinx Art Exhibition.

The exhibition showcases art from youth in the Highline area. The museum is not open to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions but the art will be on a window display on 152nd street until the end of November.

Para Los Niños is excited to announce out virtual gala,“Floreciendo,” on November 20, 2020 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM via Zoom. For the safety of our staff and our community, we are hosting our annual fundraiser online. While it may look different from previous years, with your support, we can create that same sense of community that has continually inspired and engaged people from all over King County.

As you know, Para Los Niños is a grassroots organization dedicated to uplifting the Latino community in South King County. Since 2003, we have worked with over 14,000 people.

We invite you to engage with the important work we do and stand with us to support our 17-year long history of transforming communities and creating academic success for every Latino student.

This year, thanks to the support of organizations around King County, we have been able to assist over 1,500 households with either full or partial rent, food assistance, and provide families with school and art supplies, as well as facial masks and cultural educational activities.

With your support, we can continue to adapt to what our families and community needs. By attending, you will be taking an active role in supporting our mission and vision by committing to build the same sense of community from our previous galas.

Your commitment is important to us as we navigate these difficult times and work to build that same sense of community that brings us together every year.

Floreciendo 2020 – Recaudación de fondos anual

Para Los Niños se complace en anunciar la gala virtual “Floreciendo” el 20 de noviembre del 2020, de las 6:30 PM a las 8:00 PM a través de Zoom. Por la seguridad de nuestro personal y nuestra comunidad, estamos organizando nuestra recaudación de fondos virtualmente. Si bien puede parecer diferente de años anteriores, con tu apoyo, podemos crear ese mismo sentido de comunidad que continuamente nos ha inspirado y comprometido en todo el condado de King.

Como saben, Para Los Niños es una organización de base comunitaria dedicada a elevar a la comunidad latina en el sur del condado de King. Desde 2003, hemos trabajado con más de 15,000 familias..

Te invitamos a participar en el importante trabajo que hacemos y apoyar nuestra larga historia de transformacion comunitaria en estos 17 años, apoyando el éxito académico para todos los estudiantes latinos.

Este año, gracias al apoyo de organizaciones en todo el condado de King, hemos podido ayudar a más de 1,500 hogares con asistencia de renta total o parcial, asistencia alimentaria, útiles escolares, materiales de arte, máscaras y actividades educativas y culturales.

Con tú apoyo, podemos seguir adaptándonos a las necesidades de nuestra familia y comunidad. Al asistir, tomará un papel activo en el apoyo a nuestra misión y visión; construyendo el mismo sentido de comunidad de nuestras galas anteriores.

To continue the spirit of our summer programs, Descubriendo Nuestra Cultura (Discovering Our Culture) and Alrededor del Mundo (Around the World), Para Los Niños held a Summer Resource Fair for our community in front of our new office in downtown Burien.

There was music, tacos, and giveaways for the whole family.

This event couldn’t have been possible without the support of Burien Parks and Recreation.

A thank you to the members in our community that assisted us in making this event a success.

We are grateful to have partnered with the RAVE Foundation, UPower, Discover Burien, Globo Azul Events, El Cabrito food truck, and Taqueria Casa Mixteca for this event.

We would also like to thank Grupo Bayano for providing live Puerto Rican Bomba music throughout the entire event.

During this event, we provided the Latino community of Highline with school and art supplies, Seattle Sounders soccer balls, sports equipment, and several books from different Latin American writers. In addition to this, our gift bags included board games for the whole family.

We would like to thank Seattle-based Mexican writer, Nora Girón-Dolce for providing us with her children’s books that were part of the gift bags provided to our families.

Para continuar con el espíritu de nuestros programas de verano, Descubriendo Nuestra Cultura y Alrededor del Mundo, Para Los Niños organizó una Feria de Recursos de Verano para nuestra comunidad frente a nuestra nueva oficina en el centro de Burien.

PLN Summer Resource Fair: Come meet our staff and pick up resources for the coming school year on Wednesday, August 19th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Latinx Art Showcase

Para Los Niños has partnered with the Highline Heritage Museum to give our youth an opportunity to showcase their art. Submitted works will be on display at the museum throughout the month of October.
Space is limited. Please submit your art in a timely manner.

Kids and youth in grades K-12 are encouraged to submit any piece of art or poem they have to our offices.

Guidelines:
1. Art must not be bigger than 16 inches x 20 inches.
2. Poems should not be longer than 200 words.
3. Work depicting violence or hate speech will not be accepted.
4. Suggested theme: “2020: Tu Año/Your Year”
5. You must register before visiting our offices.

Feeding El Pueblo: A Community Food Drive

Para Los Niños has been working to provide our Latinx community of Highline with resources to better manage this pandemic. One of the projects we are working on is Feeding El Pueblo, a community food drive.

We have partnered with La Roxay Productions, the Southwest Youth and Family Services, Colectiva Legal del Pueblo, and Lake Burien Presbyterian Church, to bring culturally relevant foods to the community.

The food drive is continuing to take donations every Monday through August 31^st at Lake Burien Presbyterian Church from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The food items should be non-perishable items that do not require refrigeration. Click to view the food list.

If you prefer to donate monetary funds, you can visit the GoFundMe page for Feeding El Pueblo. Funds will go towards purchasing additional food items for our community and to give gift cards for grocery purchases.

Alimentando Al Pueblo: una campaña comunitaria de comida

Para Los Niños ha estado trabajando para proporcionar a nuestra comunidad latinx del area de Highline recursos accesibles durante esta pandemia.

Uno de los proyectos en los que estamos trabajando es Alimentando Al Pueblo, una campaña comunitaria de alimentos culturalmente relevantes.

En colaboración con La Roxay Productions, Southwest Youth Family Services, Colectiva Legal del Pueblo y la Iglesia Lake Burien Presbyterian, estamos recolectando alimentos culturalmente relevantes para la comunidad.

“La comida siempre ha sido el puente que une a nuestra comunidad. Es parte de nuestra identidad y la capacidad de tener alimentos culturalmente relevantes disponibles para nuestra comunidad es parte del proceso de sanación y recuperación durante esta pandemia,” dijo la directora ejecutiva de PLN, Virginia Herrera-Páramo.

La campaña de alimentos continúa recibiendo donaciones todos los lunes hasta el 31 de agosto en la Iglesia Presbiteriana Lake Burien desde las 11:00 AM hasta 2:00 PM. What We’ve Been Doing:
We have continued our work to provide you with modified programming and resources throughout the COVID-19 crisis by working with the community to make masks, partnering with other organizations for food and mask distributions, as well as moved to a new home.

By the numbers: More than 2,000 masks distributed to the community. 225+ Gift cards given for groceries. Distributed over 400 bags of food. Over 200 school and art supplies gifted to families. Assisted 75 households with full rental assistance. 95 households with partial rental assistance.

Black Lives Matter

Every newscast, newspaper, and social media feed these days is filled with images of massive protests at major cities and small towns across the US. Images of great demonstrations are now coming in from major cities across the globe. All these demonstrations and protests are a venue to express people’s discontent with the constant violation of human rights against Black people in the US. Entire communities are saying enough is enough, we won’t tolerate any more racism, violence, and police brutality. Black lives matter.

At Para Los Niños, we are taking a solidarity stance with the Black Lives Matter movement and we invite our community to reflect on the ways in which, as individuals and community, we participate in the perpetuation of negative views against Black people, who are also part of our Latinx Black community. Let’s work on making our community a safer and inclusive place for everyone regardless of skin color. The Black Lives Matter movement is a fight for justice and basic human rights.

Cada noticiario, periódico, y red social en estos días están llenos de imágenes de protestas masivas en grandes ciudades y pequeños pueblos a través de todo Estados Unidos. Imágenes de grandes demonstraciones nos llegan ahora de ciudades alrededor del mundo entero. Todas estas demonstraciones y protestas son un vehículo para expresar el descontento de la gente contra la constante violación de los derechos humanos de personas negras en los Estados Unidos. Comunidades enteras están diciendo basta ya, no toleraremos más racismo, violencia y brutalidad policiaca. Las vidas Afrodescendientes importan.

Para Los Niños se solidariza con el movimiento Black Lives Matter (las vidas negras importan) e invitamos a nuestra comunidad a reflexionar en qué formas, ya sea como individuos o colectividad, somos partícipes de la perpetuación de estereotipos negativos sobre las personas negras. Tengamos en mente que también son parte de nuestra comunidad Latinx negra. Trabajemos para hacer de nuestra comunidad un lugar seguro e inclusivo para toda persona sin importar su color de piel. El movimiento “Black Lives Matter” representa una lucha por la justicia y derechos humanos básicos.

COVID-19 has negatively impacted everyone. It has especially hit hard the Latinx community. Some Latinos work in industries that are considered essential or jobs that cannot be done remotely. Many families have no child care services available, and due to the economic impact on business and employers, many have been laid off. Being we are an immigrant community, many do not qualify for any government assistance, placing our community at an even harsher situation.

Para Los Niños has been able to assist our community thanks to the solidarity and generosity from our supporters: Exchange Club of Highline, Group Health Foundation, King County’s Best Start for Kids, Latinx Health Board, Liberty Mutual Foundation, Satterberg Foundation, Cedarhurst Elementary PTA, Seattle Foundation, Stolte Family Foundation, and United Way. Together, they raised over $340,000. which allowed Para Los Niños to provide emergency assistance to Latino families in the Highline School District area. For the past seven months, we have been able to provide food, rent assistance, gift cards, and emergency funds impacting close to 900 families so far. Thank you for your support and trust!

A group of women from our community has been making face masks to give away to families participating in our programs and within the Highline School District area. We are very grateful for their efforts. We also want to thank, Sheng-Yen Lu Foundation, King County’s Council Member, Dave Upthegrove, and King County’s Executive, Dow Constantine for the generous donation of masks for our community.

COVID-19 ha tenido un impacto negativo con todos, especialmente ha afectado fuertemente a la comunidad latina. Algunos Latinos trabajan en industrias que se consideran esenciales o tienen trabajos que no se pueden hacer de manera remota. Muchas familias no cuentan con servicios de cuidado infantil, y debido al impacto económico en negocios y empresas muchos han sido despedidos. Siendo que somos una comunidad de inmigrantes, muchos no califican para asistencia gubernamental, lo cual pone a nuestra comunidad en una situación mucho más grave.

Para Los Niños ha podido asistir a nuestra comunidad, gracias a la solidaridad y generosidad de nuestros aliados: Exchange Club of Highline, Group Health Foundation, King County’s Best Start for Kids, Latinx Health Board, Liberty Mutual Foundation, Satterberg Foundation, Cedarhurst Elementary PTA, Seattle Foundation, Stolte Family Foundation, y United Way. Entre todas estas organizaciones se recaudaron sobre $340,000. los cuales nos han permitido proveer asistencia de emergencia a familias Latinas en el Distrito Escolar de Highline. Durante los últimos siete meses hemos proporcionado alimentos, asistencia para la renta, tarjetas de regalo y fondos de emergencia a casi 900 familias. ¡Gracias por su apoyo y confianza!

Un grupo de mujeres de nuestra comunidad han hecho mascarillas para las familias que participan en nuestros programas y del area del Distrito Escolar de Highline. Les estamos muy agradecidos de sus esfuerzos.
