We recently celebrated a commemorative and inspiring week filled with multiple graduation ceremonies. From the little ones in our Early Learning programs to the dedicated individuals in our High School Programming Club, our fearless Adult Computer Lab graduates, our Aprendamos Juntos graduates and our talented Interns, each milestone was celebrated with joy and pride. Join us as we reflect on this incredible week, highlighting the achievements of our graduates and the impact of our programs. 700 families in our community this year were a part of this week’s recognitions. Each new student graduating is a mission accomplished for para Los Ninos de Highline. We could not be prouder of our 2023 graduates.
Early Learning Program Graduations:
Our Early Learning programs, designed for children aged 2 to 5, create a nurturing environment that fosters early learning and development. Throughout the week, we witnessed these bright young minds take their first steps toward learning essential skills and becoming lifelong learners. The graduations were filled with laughter, applause, and the sheer joy of seeing these children grow and thrive under our care.
High School Programming Club Graduation:
Para Los Niños de Highline believes in empowering youth with the tools and skills necessary to succeed in an increasingly technology-driven world. Our programming club provides young individuals with opportunities to learn coding, web development, and other digital skills. The graduation ceremony for our highschoolers programming club members was a testament to their hard work, dedication, creativity and the transformative power of education. As they received their certificates, we felt a sense of pride in their accomplishments and excitement for the bright futures just around the corner.
Adult Computer Lab:
In the Adult Computer Lab, participants learn a wide range of skills, including creating an email account, sending emails, accessing their child’s school website, and even mastering online communication platforms like Zoom. We understand that these skills are crucial for adults to stay connected, access resources, and support their children’s education. The program is designed to accommodate learners of all levels, whether they are beginners or have some prior experience with computers. Our dedicated instructors provide patient and individualized instruction, guiding participants through hands-on activities and practical exercises. Graduates of the program gain not only technical skills but also increased confidence and agency, enabling them to navigate the digital landscape with ease. Celebrating the accomplishments of our Adult Computer Lab graduates during our week of graduations was truly special. Witnessing their growth in patience, creativity, and curiosity was a beautiful sight. We celebrate each graduate’s willingness to step out of their comfort zone and embrace new technologies, knowing that these skills will enhance their lives and open doors to new opportunities.
Aprendamos Juntos:
Aprendamos Juntos is designed to address community needs more broadly through an inclusive model of lifelong education across generations, an approach that strengthens both children and their families. While the children did their homework, parents attended English classes as part of the parallel learning approach. Para Los Niños de highline was grateful to celebrate the graduation of over 100 participating pairs. In this program, the holistic nature of PLN’s approach is noted, making the intergenerational graduation especially meaningful. Building culturally relevant programs upon a foundation of love and respect, supported by a community leadership model that recognizes the talents and skills of each individual student is something we should all be able to celebrate.
Intern Graduations:
Our internship program offers valuable real-world experience and mentorship to youth & teens, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in their chosen careers. The intern graduations marked a significant milestone in their professional journeys, celebrating their growth and achievements during their time with us. We were deeply moved by their determination, passion, and commitment to making a positive impact on their communities.
Throughout the week of graduations, there were many emotional moments that touched our hearts. Parents shedding tears of joy, mentors beaming with pride, and the overwhelming sense of accomplishment radiating from our graduates created an atmosphere of celebration and unity. We had the privilege of hearing vulnerable heartfelt testimonials from parents, mentors, and graduates themselves, highlighting the profound impact of our programs on their lives.
As we look back on this week of graduations, we are filled with renewed focus and enthusiasm and a deep sense of responsibility. The success and growth of our graduates inspire us to continue our mission of fostering academic success for every latino student through parent and community involvement. We remain committed to providing quality education, mentorship, and equitable support and advocacy to inspire the next generation of leaders, innovators, and changemakers.
Para los Niños de Highline quisiera extender un sincero agradecimiento al Seattle Times por su artículo reciente que destacó la importancia de la creación de un entorno de aprendizaje donde padres e hijos puedan convivir y aprender juntos. Estos son principios que son fundamentales para nuestra misión, y estamos encantados de que el Seattle Times les haya llamado la atención. We’re thrilled to announce our 2021 Virtual Gala keynote speaker is Dr. Lonnie Tristan Renteria (he/him/they/them), Lonnie has continued Puentes’ founder Maria Jose Cote’s vision of making accessible mental health interventions available to immigrant communities. He is both a therapist and educator. His education and experience cover a broad range of subjects that inform his practice, from cultural theory, literature, narrative theory, to positive and forensic psychology. He is a current member of the American Psychological Association, American Counseling Association, Washington Mental Health Counselors Association, and The Global Center for Forensic Research.
We are also excited to also announce Doris Castro, a community leader, a graduate of PLN’s Academia de Liderazgo and an active Para Los Niñosprogram participant will be our featured family at this year’s virtual gala. Doris is from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, works with the elderly and children, she is a mother, wife, and advocate for her family and community.

Thanks to 4 Culture, Para Los Niños invited local artist Amaranta Ibrra-Sandys to work with our PLN Latinx Youth participants on a mural art project. The mural project consisted of a 3 part series in-person and via Zoom.

About the Mural and Artist:
Raquel García Martínez was born and raised in the border town of Tijuana Baja California, Mexico.Exposure to the beautiful indigenous and regional art styles from all over the country was an important factor in her love for painting.
Raquel is a self-taught painter who enjoys portraying her culture through bright and folkloric decorative shadow boxes also known as “Nichos.” She has a special interest in utilizing recycled materials as well as rescued or repurposed wooden items and furniture. Her main medium is acrylic paint however Raquel is also an avid sketch artist with pencil and graphite.

Raquel García Martínez nació y crecio en la ciudad fronteriza de Tijuana Baja California, México. La exposición a los hermosos estilos artísticos indígenas y regionales de todo el país fue un factor importante en su amor por la pintura.
Raquel es una pintora autodidacta que disfruta retratar su cultura a través de cajas de sombras decorativas brillantes y folclóricas, también conocidas como “Nichos”. Tiene un interés especial en utilizar materiales reciclados, así como en muebles y artículos de madera rescatados o reutilizados. Su medio principal es la pintura acrílica, sin embargo, Raquel también es una ávida dibujante con lápiz y grafito.

About the Mural and Artist:
Amaranta Sandys was born and raised in Mexico City. In 2000 she returned back to Seattle after finishing her degree in Ceramics and Folk Mexican Art at Instituto Nacional de Bellas (INBA). In 2013, through Latino Ventures Business, she launched with great success ArtMaranth Mobile School.
Her art programs now are offered virtually at libraries, schools, and community centers serving underrepresented youth, young mothers, and families around King County. Over the last 17 years, she has ventured into new artistic territories: curating art exhibitions, mentoring murals with youth, poster commission, public art, volunteering, and advocating for accessible Arts Education.
Her artwork has been inspired by social change, nature, cycles, and ancestral rituals. “My illustrations depict personal visual narratives through bright colors, bold lines & textures.” She portrayed people’s struggles and awareness from indigenous rights, racial social justice, equity, diversity, and pure joy. Women are connected to the mind and heart. Through her artistic practice, she tries to find balance in creative spaces, urban life, and family time. She uses acrylics, clay, vintage maps, watercolor pencils, and found objects

Nuestra segunda presentación virtual es de la artista de medios mixtos y artista docente Amaranta Sandys, del sur de Seattle.

Amaranta Sandys nació y creció en la Ciudad de México. En el año 2000 regresó a Seattle después de terminar su licenciatura en Cerámica y Arte Popular Mexicano, en el Instituto Nacional de Bellas (INBA). En el año 2013, a través de Latino Ventures Business, lanzó con gran éxito ArtMaranth Mobile School.
Sus programas de arte ahora se ofrecen virtualmente en bibliotecas, escuelas y centros comunitarios que sirven a jóvenes que tradicionalmente no son representados adecuadamente, madres jóvenes y familias en todo el condado de King. Durante los últimos 17 años, se ha aventurado en nuevos territorios artísticos: curadora de exposiciones de arte, tutoría de murales con jóvenes, realiza carteles, arte público, voluntariado y defensa de la educación artística accesible.
Su obra de arte se ha inspirado en el cambio social, la naturaleza, los ciclos y los rituales ancestrales. “Mis ilustraciones representan narrativas visuales personales a través de colores brillantes, líneas y texturas llamativas. We had our second Para Los Niños Open House. Guests enjoyed a tour of our new offices, traditional appetizers, a silent auction, a resource table (with current information on our programs) with free books and prizes, and the unveiling of our 4 new murals. They were able to learn more about our programs by talking to staff, volunteer community members, and volunteer Madrinas.
Tuvimos nuestra segunda Open House de Para Los Niños. Los invitados disfrutaron de un recorrido por nuestras nuevas oficinas, aperitivos tradicionales, una subasta, una mesa de recursos con libros, premios gratuitos y la presentación de nuestros 4 nuevos murales. Tuvimos información actualizada sobre nuestros programas, que compartieron el personal, los miembros voluntarios de la comunidad y madrinas voluntarias.

About the Mural:
“This mural depicts four young Latinas using their knowledge to create technology that will help our community address important problems. This drawing is inspired by a team of young Latinas who participated in the European Girls Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI), the first international programming competition for girls. The names of these girls are Maeva, Fernanda, Cynthia, and Ariel. Cynthia and Ari won a Silver and a Bronze medal, respectively (EGOI results). From the very moment I was commissioned this mural by Virginia, the Executive Director of Para Los Niños, I knew that I was going to draw young Latinxs creating technology with a special focus on depicting people of color. This was only natural to me as I am passionate about STEM Education. At the same time that I was thinking about the perfect idea for my artwork, I was following the adventures of Maeva, Fernanda, Cynthia, and Ariel, thanks to the fact that I serve as a Board Member at omegaUp the Educational Platform that organizes the Olympiad for Girls in Mexico. Then everything connected in my mind and I had the perfect idea for my artwork! This is the original sketch on my artist page. I am very inspired by the hard work that students have done and all the knowledge that they have accumulated, and not only the four Latinas depicted on my mural, but every single student who is working every day to learn more and more, also I’m very proud of knowing that Latinas are representing our community in such important events and demonstrating what we are made of creativity, hard work, passion for solving abstract problems with whatever tools we have. I hope this mural inspires young Latinxs to continue solving problems (as we all do every single day) and to adventure themselves in STEM Education and in a few years start creating technology that will greatly benefit our community! I am grateful to Para Los Niños for the opportunity to share my artwork with my community. Thank you!”

About the Artist:
“Education changed Rafa Díaz’s life. Now he works towards the democratization of education and is a strong advocate of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Rafa is the artist known as “rcxr” who uses his artwork to create positive conversations about social justice, anti-racism, DE&I, and to visibilize BIPOC in visual spaces. Rafa has donated his work to help advance the mission of Washington nonprofits. Rafa grew up in “La Guerrero” in Mexico City. When he was 12 he started working to support his family. He worked as a delivery boy, at printing workshops, as a waiter, and as a general employee at Burger King and Costco. Thanks to the support of his mom, sisters, and the whole community, Rafa never gave up on education and earned multiple awards in Mathematical Olympiads at National and International levels, and was able to complete his BS in Computer Science. Rafa moved to Seattle to work as a software engineer. Rafa also serves as a Director at omegaUp, a nonprofit organization with the mission of building the talent pipeline of Software Engineers in the Latinx Community by providing an educational platform together with social programs.”

“Programando Nuestro Futuro” Nuevo Mural
El arte es de gran importancia para nuestra comunidad y este verano hemos podido crear bellísimas obras en nuestra oficina de Para Los Niños. ¡Tenemos nuevos murales! Ven a visitarlos a cualquier hora del día (3 de ellos se encuentran fuera). Comenzamos a develar virtualmente, el primero llamado “Programando Nuestro Futuro” de el artista rcxr (Rafa Díaz).
Mas Sobre el Mural:
La educación cambió la vida de Rafa. Actualmente él trabaja por democratizar el acceso a la educación y es un fuerte defensor de la diversidad, equidad e inclusión. Rafa es un artista conocido como “rcxr” quien usa su arte para crear conversaciones positivas en torno a justicia social, anti-racismo, diversidad, equidad, inclusión y para visualizar a personas de color en espacios visuales. Rafa ha donado su trabajo para apoyar a organizaciones sin fines de lucro en Washington. Rafa creció en “La Guerrero” y en la Ciudad de México. Cuando tenía 12 años comenzó a trabajar para ayudar a su familia. Algunos de los trabajos que realizó fueron mensajero en talleres de impresión, mesero, empleado general en Costco y Burger King. Gracias a la ayuda de su mamá, sus hermanas y su comunidad Rafa nunca se dio por vencido y pudo ganar múltiples reconocimientos en la Olimpiada Mexicana de Matemáticas a nivel nacional e internacional y pudo completar una carrera de ingeniería en ciencias computacionales. Rafa se mudó a Seattle para trabajar como ingeniero de software. Rafa también sirve como director en omegaUp, una organización sin fines de lucro cuya misión es construir la plataforma de ingenierxs de software en la comunidad Latina a través de ofrecer una plataforma educativa junto con programas sociales.

Este mural representa a cuatro niñas latinas que usan su conocimiento para crear tecnología que ayude a nuestra comunidad a resolver importantes problemas. Este dibujo fue inspirado en un grupo de niñas latinas que participaron en la Olimpiada Europea de Informática Femenil (EGOI), la primera competencia internacional de programación para niñas. Los nombres de estas estudiantes son; Maeva, Fernanda, Cynthia y Ariel. Cynthia y Ariel ganaron medallas de plata y bronce respectivamente (resultados de la EGOI) Desde que Virginia, la Directora Ejecutiva de Para Los Niños, me pidió colaborar con este mural yo sabía que iba a dibujar niños estudiantes latinos creando tecnología con un enfoque especial en representar a niños de color. Esto fue algo natural para mí ya que me apasiona la educación en ciencias, tecnología, ingenierías y matemáticas. Al mismo tiempo que pensaba en la idea perfecta para mi mural seguía la aventura de Maeva, Fernanda, Cynthia y Ariel en la EGOI gracias al hecho de que soy director en omegaUp la nonprofit que organiza la Olimpiada Femenil de Informática en México. Así todo se conectó en mi mente y se me ocurrió la idea perfecta: cuatro niñas programando. Este es el boceto original. El duro trabajo que las estudiantes han hecho y todo el conocimiento que adquirieron me inspira mucho. Y no hablo solamente de las niñas representadas en mi mural, si no de cada una de los estudiantes que trabajan día con día en aprender más y más, también me llena de orgullo saber que ellas representan a nuestra comunidad en tan importante evento, demostrando de lo que estamos hechxs: trabajo duro, pasión en resolver problemas abstractos con cualquier herramienta que tengamos a la mano. Espero que este mural inspire a niños y jóvenes Latinxs a seguir resolviendo problemas (como lo han hecho día a día) y a aventurarse en la educación en ciencias, tecnologías, ingenierías y matemáticas y que en algunos años creen tecnología que beneficiará enormemente a nuestra comunidad. ¡Muchas gracias a Para Los Niños por la oportunidad de compartir mi arte con mi comunidad!
Para Los Niños held its second Summer Resource Fair for our community in front of our new office in downtown Burien. We wanted to continue the spirit of our summer programs, Descubriendo Nuestra Cultura (Discovering Our Culture) and Alrededor del Mundo (Around the World).
Families received school and art supplies, sports equipment, and several books from different Latin American writers. In addition to this, our gift bags included board games for the whole family and health kits courtesy of Molina Healthcare. During the event, families got to enjoy some refreshments courtesy of Taquería Casa Mixteca, salsa music and entered a raffle for one of the 15 bikes donated by Bike Works. Our partners at Public Health – Seattle & King County joined our event and offered free COVID-19 Vaccines (Pfizer, J&J, Moderna).

Feria de Recursos Verano 2021
Para Los Niños celebró su segunda Feria de Recursos de Verano para nuestra comunidad a frente a nuestra nueva oficina en el centro de Burien. Queríamos continuar con el espíritu de nuestros programas de verano, Descubriendo Nuestra Cultura y Alrededor del Mundo.
Las familias recibieron útiles escolares y artísticos, equipamiento deportivo y varios libros de diferentes escritores latinoamericanos. Además de esto, nuestras bolsas de regalo incluían juegos de mesa para toda la familia y paquetes de cortesía con productos de salud de Molina Healthcare. Durante el evento, las familias pudieron disfrutar de refrescos cortesía de Taquería Casa Mixteca, música salsa y participaron en el sorteo de las 15 bicicletas donadas por Bike Works. Nuestros aliados de Salud Pública – Seattle y el Condado de King se unieron a nuestro evento y ofrecieron vacunas COVID-19 gratuitas (Pfizer, J&J, Moderna).

Earlier this month we had our first Open House. Guests enjoyed a tour of our new offices, traditional appetizers, drinks, a silent auction, and the unveiling of our 4 new murals. They were able to learn more about our programs by talking to staff and volunteer community members. We were joined by two of the mural artists – Raquel García Martínez and Rafa Díaz, our interim president Bevin Taylor, Madrinas, Padrinos and friends of PLN.
A principios de este mes tuvimos nuestra primera Open House. Los invitados disfrutaron de un recorrido por nuestras nuevas oficinas, aperitivos tradicionales, bebidas, una subasta y la presentación de nuestros 4 nuevos murales. Pudieron aprender más sobre nuestros programas hablando con el personal y los miembros voluntarios de la comunidad. Since 2013 Roxana Pardo Garcia has served on the Board of Directors for Para los Niños. In 2019 she was appointed Board Chair, Roxana has dedicated over 8 years of service to PLN and the Latinx Community. We want to thank Roxana and wish her the best on her new journey as she steps away from her position as Board Chair and a Board member.

“Dear Para los Niños Community,
¡Hola familia! I hope this finds you in high spirits and in good health. I am writing this note to share that effective June 18th, I will be stepping down from my role as Board Chair and from the Board of Directors of Para los Niños.
I have served this agency in this capacity for 8 years – I joined in 2013 shortly after concluding my undergraduate journey and looking to return to serve my Community. I appreciate PLN taking a chance on me; for opening their doors to a young professional and teaching me so much along the way.
I have seen PLN grow – immensely, in these past 8 years. I have seen the staff grow, the physical space of the organization grow, and impact in Community grow. I am forever grateful to the memories, the lessons, and for the relationships cultivated.
And like all journeys, they come to an end! 8 years is a long time (almost half the life of PLN!) and its time I step aside so that new leadership can flourish. I am proud of PLN – the staff and the board – as we have challenged ourselves to grow, to invest in our learning so we can do and be better for our community. I leave PLN in good hands.
While I leave the PLN board, I will not be leaving PLN or the Community. If anything, I will just be transforming into a partner of PLN so we can continue the great work of serving our comunidad. For us by us.

¡Hola familia! Espero que esta carta los encuentre bien y con buena salud. Estoy escribiendo esta carta para compartir que a partir del 18 de Junio, dejaré mi cargo como presidente de la junta y de la junta directiva de Para los Niños.
He servido en esta agencia en esta capacidad durante 8 años; me uní en 2013 poco después de concluir mi viaje de la Universidad y buscando servir a mi comunidad. Agradezco que PLN me dio una oportunidad; por abrir sus puertas a un joven profesional y enseñarme tanto en el camino.
He visto crecer a PLN, inmensamente, en estos últimos 8 años. He visto crecer al personal, crecer el espacio físico de la organización y el impacto que tienen en la comunidad. Siempre estaré agradecido por los recuerdos, las lecciones y las relaciones cultivadas.
¡Y como todos los viajes, llegan a su fin! 8 años es mucho tiempo (¡casi la mitad de la vida de PLN!) Y es hora de que me haga a un lado para que pueda florecer un nuevo liderazgo.

Spring Quarter English Classes
We are excited to announce our Spring Quarter English classes levels 1 and 2, started Wednesday, March 31st. Our current students are very excited to continue their education and our new students are excited to start learning.

Para Los Niños was awarded a certificate of appreciation for our work helping the community get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Staff updates
We recently had one of our community organizers be promoted to our Communication and Development Manager role. We’d like to welcome Rosie Delcid into her new position.
“Rosie Delcid is a Highline High School graduate and a current student at Evergreen State College. She loves to spend her free time taking photos of the northwest, painting, and spending time with her family. In her previous roles, she was able to empower the Latinx community through financial seminars, business seminars, community events, budgeting 101 classes, and mentorships. Before becoming PLN’s Communication and Development Manager she was a community organizer for PLN. She has proudly been serving the Burien community since 2014.”
Due to the growing need for technological literacy in the Latinx community, we hired a second Computer Lab Assistant. We will be able to offer more classes for community members. We’d like to welcome Vanessa Delgado-Alvarez to the PLN team.
“Vanessa is a Tyee High School graduate and a proud Husky of the University of Washington. She got really familiar with Para Los Niños’ programs while volunteering at the organization when she was in middle school and high school. She is happy to be back as a part of the PLN team. In her free time, she enjoys going out for runs, watching sunsets/rising at waterfronts, discovering new restaurants, watching and attending Sounders games. In the past, she has worked with the Seattle Seahawks, Archrival, and nonprofits in their PR/marketing departments. She has a passion for working with students and helping them achieve their goals, whether it’s in their education (helping first-generation students apply for college) or career development. Vanessa is looking forward to working with and supporting the Latinx community.”

Clases de Inglés en Primavera

Recientemente, una de las organizadoras comunitarias ascendido al puesto de Gerente de Comunicación y Desarrollo. Nos gustaría darle la bienvenida a Rosie Delcid en su nuevo puesto.
“Rosie Delcid se graduó de Highline High School y actualmente es estudiante de “Evergreen State College”. Le encanta pasar su tiempo libre tomando fotos del Noroeste, pintando y pasando tiempo con su familia. Antes de convertirse en Gerente de Comunicación y Desarrollo de PLN, fue organizadora comunitaria de PLN. Ella ha estado sirviendo con orgullo a la comunidad de Burien desde 2014.”

Wrapping up 2020
We ended the year by providing the families registered in our programs with presents for the holidays thanks to Tres Lecheria, Colores Spanish Immersion Pre-School, and Imperial Court of Seattle and the Olympic and Rainier Empire. Additionally, to fight the technological inequities seen within our community, and thanks to King County, we distributed 119 laptop to adults and provided them with tutorials to learn how to navigate the ever-changing virtual landscape.
Where we’re going in 2021
Our Latinx Youth Program will be providing a limited number of internships in 2021 to assist students with their desired skills and objectives to best prepare them for their post-high school plan. Play & Learn and Aprendamos Juntos (Let’s Learn Together) has continued virtually, while Academia de Liderazgo (Leadership Academy) is beginning its virtual meetings to provide leadership development to our adult community members. Next month, there will be a networking event for participants and the Para Los Niños staff. Our Computer Lab will resume its classes soon. Plus, now’s the best time to become a part of our monthly giving program, Madrinas and Padrinos, as our donor appreciation program is launching this year.

Finalizando 2020
Terminamos el año entregando a las familias inscritas en nuestros programas obsequios para las fiestas gracias a Tres Lecheria, Colores Spanish Immersion Pre-School, Imperial Court of Seattle y Olympic y Rainier Empire. This year, we were able to assist the families registered in our programs by providing toys to their children between the ages of 6 months to 18 years old. Now, more than ever, it’s important for children to have toys to keep their spirits high as we continue to navigate these unprecedented times.
The Tres Lecheria has partnered with Para Los Niños for several years to host a toy drive for our families. While this was ISCSORE’s and Colors Spanish Immersion Pre-School’s first year participating, we are grateful for their support.
Este año, pudimos ayudar a las familias registradas en nuestros programas proporcionando juguetes a sus hijos que tienen 6 meses a 18 años. Ahora, más que nunca, es importante que los niños tengan juguetes para mantener el ánimo mientras continuamos adaptándonos en estos tiempos difíciles.

Para Los Niños is proud to announce that we will be offering computer classes to the community.
These classes will start will cover topics depending on what each person needs. Attendees can ask any questions or concerns they have surrounding technology.
Our Computer Lab assistant, Citlaly will be covering topics from how to send an email, create an email, navigate any video conference platforms, troubleshooting, and more.
There are limited spots for these classes as they will take place in person. We will be following social distancing procedures to ensure the safety of the community and our staff.

Every newscast, newspaper, and social media feed these days is filled with images of massive protests at major cities and small towns across the US. Images of great demonstrations are now coming in from major cities across the globe. All these demonstrations and protests are a venue to express people’s discontent with the constant violation of human rights against Black people in the US. Entire communities are saying enough is enough, we won’t tolerate any more racism, violence, and police brutality. Black lives matter.
At Para Los Niños, we are taking a solidarity stance with the Black Lives Matter movement and we invite our community to reflect on the ways in which, as individuals and community, we participate in the perpetuation of negative views against Black people, who are also part of our Latinx Black community. Let’s work on making our community a safer and inclusive place for everyone regardless of skin color. The Black Lives Matter movement is a fight for justice and basic human rights.

Cada noticiario, periódico, y red social en estos días están llenos de imágenes de protestas masivas en grandes ciudades y pequeños pueblos a través de todo Estados Unidos. Imágenes de grandes demonstraciones nos llegan ahora de ciudades alrededor del mundo entero. Todas estas demonstraciones y protestas son un vehículo para expresar el descontento de la gente contra la constante violación de los derechos humanos de personas negras en los Estados Unidos. COVID-19 has negatively impacted everyone. It has especially hit hard the Latinx community. Some Latinos work in industries that are considered essential or jobs that cannot be done remotely. Many families have no child care services available, and due to the economic impact on business and employers, many have been laid off. Being we are an immigrant community, many do not qualify for any government assistance, placing our community at an even harsher situation.
Para Los Niños has been able to assist our community thanks to the solidarity and generosity from our supporters: Exchange Club of Highline, Group Health Foundation, King County’s Best Start for Kids, Latinx Health Board, Liberty Mutual Foundation, Satterberg Foundation, Cedarhurst Elementary PTA, Seattle Foundation, Stolte Family Foundation, and United Way. Together, they raised over $340,000. which allowed Para Los Niños to provide emergency assistance to Latino families in the Highline School District area. For the past seven months, we have been able to provide food, rent assistance, gift cards, and emergency funds impacting close to 900 families so far. Thank you for your support and trust!
A group of women from our community has been making face masks to give away to families participating in our programs and within the Highline School District area. We are very grateful for their efforts. We also want to thank, Sheng-Yen Lu Foundation, King County’s Council Member, Dave Upthegrove, and King County’s Executive, Dow Constantine for the generous donation of masks for our community.

Last Thursday, January 16th, Burien’s City Council held an ‘Emergency Special Meeting’ to discuss the results of the pollutant testing performed at the Burien Annex Building earlier this month and make their final determinations on the use of the building by the current non-profit tenants. The Council ordered the testing at their previous January 3rd meeting and results needed to be published before January 31st, the deadline to vacate the building.
The City hired Tarracon,
geotechnical firm, to conduct the testing. Scott Parker, from Tarracon,
discussed the results publicly and confirmed there are no immediate dangers
to the tenants using the facilities. The company tested specifically for
asbestos in floor tiles, lead and copper in water, or presence of mold. The
official results confirmed what members of the public and community groups have
been voicing, it is expected for a building of this age (built in 1948) to have
certain pollutants. Asbestos wouldn’t be a risk as long as it remains intact
and undisturbed, lead in the water is avoided by switching to bottled wattled,
and there are relatively economical ways to deal with mold issues. Read the

Upon disclosure of the results, a
relief to the tenants and the community members to use the facilities, the Council
remained firm on their decision to close down the building but changed the
January 31st deadline to vacate to July 31st, 2020. In the meantime, the City
will perform repairs up to $25,000 to remediate the most pressing safety
issues.
At Para Los Niños, we are relieved to know we don’t have to rush out or worse, be homeless by the 31st of January. We will use this time to judiciously find a suitable permanent home for PLN within the City of Burien. So far, it has been a challenge to find affordable rent in the area. We will continue to hold our programs and activities at their current locations and times. As you can imagine, a move of this nature requires numerous expenses. We appreciate any donation you can provide us. Please share the link widely.
The future of the Annex Building is unknown. PLN Board Members extended a letter to the City Council indicating their strong desire to be participants in opportunities for community involvement in regards to the future of the Annex Building. They also asked the City to provide priority to the seven displaced organizations in any future remodels or redevelopments.
We would like to thank the City Council for extending the vacancy order by 6 months which will allow all non-profits greater opportunities to find suitable locations. Special thanks to the Citizens of Burien, B-Town Blog, and friends of the seven affected non-profit organizations, who rallied in support of the deadline extension for their solidarity.

agencia aquí en Burien. Hasta el momento, ha sido un reto encontrar oficinas

El futuro del edificio Burien-Annex es desconocido. La Junta Directiva de PLN envió una carta al Consejo de la Ciudad indicando su deseo de ser partícipes de cualquier oportunidad comunitaria con respecto al futuro del Burien-Annex. As the year comes to an end, let’s take time to look back and see what was accomplished during this transition year at PLN. I arrived in late April and within days, we engaged in our first fundraiser, Seattle’s GiveBig 2019 campaign. We set a modest goal of $5,000 and ended up raising $5,596. Thanks to everyone that contributed financially or by helping us spread the word about PLN and the campaign. We also received a donation from Bidi Bidi Bom Bash. That same month, we had our Closing Ceremonies for Aprendamos Juntos and Play & Learn programs. These programs serve over 300 parents and children. Leadership Academy graduated 7 parents. A number of PLN Leadership Academy graduates were active members of the King County Equity Cabinet and Highline School District committees. PLN hosted the county’s press ceremony to announce the Open Spaces Initiative. In a blink of an eye, it was time to get ready for one of our biggest programmatic events, our Summer Camp. Over 183 kids participated and we served them 7,775 meals and snacks.

There were staff and board transitions and new folks joined our efforts. We count with Noe as Operations Coordinator, Josefina as Youth Coordinator, Roxanna Pardo García stepped up as Board President and Jasmine Sears as Interim Treasurer.
Our grant writing efforts have been very successful this year and we will be adding additional staff positions to better serve our community and expand capacity in some programs. Check out our current volunteer and job opportunities. With the help of outreach from our Padres Unidos and Leadership Academy participants, pretty much all of our after school programs are now full. Additionally, PLN is actively engaged in civic affairs such as Voter Registration and the upcoming 2020 Census. Stay tuned for more information about these programs in the upcoming year.
Annual Gala Sueños 2019
We were able to put together our Annual Gala Dinner in record time, 3 months! This year’s theme was Sueños. The event was sold out. Friends, allies, sponsors, and community said presente and helped us raise a gross amount of over $75K in support of our programs. Thanks to all the donors and volunteers. We had the pleasure of having young Latinos provide entertainment during our gala, Moko Jumbies and Grupo Folklórico Tonantzin, stole the show. Alma & Azúcar closed the evening with live music.
Night at the Museum
We engaged in new collaborations with the Highline Heritage Museum and the City of Burien Economic Development to celebrate and highlight our traditional Posadas. Over 200 people attended the Posada event.
We maintained partnerships with Latino Community Fund, Bikes Works, Highline School District, Exchange Club of Highline, and Cubes Baking Company. Stay tuned as we will be the 2020 beneficiary of the Seattle Cake Con 2020, which will take place in Febrero. Thanks to Cubes Baking Company!
Aprendamos Juntos Closing Ceremony
The excitement of our new website, grant writing and fundraising efforts was overshadowed by the sudden news from the City of Burien that we must vacate our offices at the end of January 2020. We were given less than 43 days to pack and find a place to move. The City of Burien is helping us find a future home for PLN. We will volunteers to assist us in packing and clean up. Contact us if you can help.
Leadership Academy Graduates
If 2019 was a transition year, 2020 with the impending office relocation, it already promises to be a year of changes for PLN. The support from allies and friends of PLN has been key to our success this year and we certainly will need it more than ever in the new year. Ya el 2019 llega a su final, así que tomemos un momento para mirar atrás para ver lo que logramos en este año de transición en PLN. En un abrir y cerrar de ojos, ya era tiempo de prepararnos para uno de nuestros programas más grande, el Campamento de Verano. Participaron unos 183 niños y servimos 7,775 almuerzos y meriendas.
Aprendamos Juntos
Este año hubo transición de empleados y miembros de la Junta Directiva y nuevas personas se unieron a nuestros esfuerzos. Contamos con Noé como Coordinador de Operaciones, Josefina como Coordinadora de Jóvenes, Roxanna Pardo García asumió el rol de Presidenta de la Junta y Jasmine Sears el de Tesorera Interina. Nuestros esfuerzos para conseguir fondos a través de propuestas resultó muy exitoso y estaremos añadiendo más personal para servir mejor a nuestra comunidad y expandir la capacidad de algunos programas. Vean las oportunidades para voluntarios y vacantes de empleo. Prácticamente todos nuestros programas después de la escuela (extracurriculares) están a su capacidad gracias los esfuerzos de reclutamiento de los participantes de Padres Unidos y la Academia de Liderazgo. En adición, PLN está envuelto activamente en asuntos cívicos tales como Registración de Votantes y el Censo 2020 que se avecina. Manténganse atentos para mayor información sobre estos programas en este nuevo año que se aproxima.
Grupo Folklórico Tonantzin
Pudimos organizar nuestra Cena de Gala en un tiempo récord de tres meses. El tema este año lo fue Sueños. El evento estuvo vendido a capacidad. Amistades, aliados, auspiciadores y miembros de la comunidad dijeron presente y nos ayudaron a recaudar la cantidad bruta de sobre $75 mil en apoyo a nuestros programas. Gracias a todos los donantes y voluntarios. Tuvimos el placer de tener a jóvenes Latinos proveyendo entretenimiento durante nuestra cena de gala. Los Moko Jumbies y el Grupo Folklórico Tonantzin se robaron el espectáculo. Alma & Azúcar cerró la noche con música en vivo.
Summer Camp
Establecimos nuevas colaboraciones con el Highline Heritage Museum y la oficina de Desarrollo Económico de la Ciudad de Burien para celebrar y resaltar nuestras tradicionales Posadas. Sobre 200 personas asistieron al evento de las Posadas.
Mantuvimos nuestra colaboración con el Latino Community Fund, Bikes Works, Highline School District, Exchange Club of Highline, and Cubes Baking Company. Estén pendientes pues PLN será el beneficiario del evento Seattle Cake Con 2020 que se llevará a cabo en Febrero. ¡Gracias a Cubes Baking Company por escoger a PLN!
Parents at a worker’s rights workshop
La emoción de tener una nueva página web, nuevas propuestas y fondos fue opacado por la súbita noticia que nos diera la Ciudad de Burien de que tenemos que desalojar nuestras oficinas a finales de enero del 2020. Apenas nos dieron 43 días para empacar y encontrar otro lugar para movernos. La ciudad nos está ayudando a encontrar otro hogar para PLN. Necesitamos voluntarios que nos ayuden a empacar y limpiar con urgencia. Si Usted puede ayudarnos, contáctenos.
Si el 2019 fue un año de transición, el 2020, con la mudanza de oficinas, ya promete ser un año de cambios para PLN. El apoyo de aliados y amistades de PLN ha sido clave para nuestro éxito este año que termina y definitivamente lo será, más que nunca, en el año que comienza. Today, The Burien Chamber of Commerce hosted a Roundtable discussion regarding the recent decision of the City of Burien to close down the Burien-Annex building and in the process leave without office space all seven non-profits currently calling this building home. Burien Actors Theatre, Hiliners Musical Theatre, Burien Cooperative Preschool, Transform Burien, Meals on Wheels America, and Journey Arts and Crafts are also located at the Burien-Annex, like PLN.
We are grateful to the Chamber for their support and leadership in this difficult time. They have launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to help the seven affected organizations. You could watch the live stream on B-town’s Facebook page.

Burien’s City Council held a public meeting in the evening. The room was packed with community members and supporters of the various affected organizations. Practically every person that spoke requested extra time and assistance. The request was to stay until the end of the academic year. Various community members raised a variety of concerns about key details and important contradictions that leave many unanswered questions and raise suspicions about the entire process.

Councilmember Nancy Tosta expressed support for the 6-month extension and indicated she also had a lot of the same questions and concerns raised by community members. Outgoing Councilmember Lucy Krakoviak had questions about the timing of the building inspection and how it may have been influenced by the insurance company. Councilmember Krystal Marx stated over 45 public comments and well over 140 emails have been received in regards to the Annex, which indicates the high level of concern among citizens. The insurance carrier came up a few times as the possible reason behind the abrupt request for displacement. Councilmember Pedro Olguín asked what is the liability to the city. City Manager Brian Wilson indicated some of the liability concerns could not be discussed publicly because they are a legal matter. Councilmember Krystal Marx asked why it couldn’t be discussed in public, to which the City’s lawyer, Lisa Marshall, responded the City could waive their client-attorney right but it was not advisable. Councilmember Tosta asked if there are other insurance alternatives or if the City has done any asbestos, mold, or lead testing as a member of the public did. Mr. Wilson indicated he has not evaluated other insurance alternatives. He was advised the City might not find an insurance company willing to take the risk. Mr. Wilson indicated usually when you mitigate one thing a few others will come up and when the consultant indicates the probability of lead, asbestos, or mold is because there is a high likelihood of it being there. Mayor Jimmy Matta acknowledged the timing was wrong and he took responsibility for not giving 3 or 6 months notice. The Mayor indicated he agrees to have a 3rd party testing of hazardous materials but if the testing comes back positive the city will be obligated to shut down the building immediately. In the end, the City Manager was asked to evaluate insurance alternatives, research for third-party testing and evaluate the risks and liabilities in extending the deadline until June. The upcoming new City Council will be tasked with making a decision at their January meeting.

PLN would like to thank all the families and friends of PLN that attended the meetings today and raised your concerns for the future of PLN’s location. It is important for city officials to hear directly from those directly impacted. PLN has submitted over 40 signatures from families from our programs. Please spread the word and if you know of a potential new location, please let us know right away. As of today, we must move by January 31st, 2020.

Estamos muy agradecidos a la Cámara de Comercio por su apoyo y liderazgo en tan difícil situación. Ellos han lanzado una campaña de recaudación de fondos via GoFundMe para ayudar a las siete organizaciones afectadas. Pueden ver la grabación de la reunión en la página de Facebook de B-town.

Miembros de la comunidad trajeron a colación detalles importantes y contradicciones que dejan más preguntas y levantan muchas sospechas sobre el proceso.

El alcalde Jimmy Matta reconoció que el momento era incorrecto y asumió la responsabilidad de no dar aviso con al menos 3 o 6 meses de anticipo. El alcalde indicó que acepta que el edificio sea analizado de forma independiente para determinar la presencia de materiales peligrosos, pero si la prueba resulta positiva, la ciudad estaría obligada a cerrar el edificio de inmediato. Al final, se le pidió al Administrador de la Ciudad que evaluara alternativas de seguro, investigara la posibilidad de análisis independiente y evaluara los riesgos y responsabilidades legales de extender el plazo hasta junio. El nuevo consejo que entra en vigor en Enero, tendrá la tarea de tomar la decisión final al respecto en su reunión de enero.

As you may have heard, the City of Burien has notified tenants of the Burien Annex – Where PLN is housed – that we must vacate the building by January 31st due to findings from a building inspection in November.
Burien-Annex
A time frame of two months is not enough for any of our organizations to move out. Burien Actors Theatre, Hiliners Musical Theatre, Burien Cooperative Preschool, Transform Burien, Meals on Wheels America, and Journey Arts and Crafts are also located at the Burien-Annex. As we consider our program priorities and the time involved in searching for a new facility that can meet our needs as well as align with our financial resources, we believe that a frame of time that matches the end of the school year is more realistic and achievable. The impacted organizations are still searching for ways to address this issue, but we wanted to provide our community and supporters with an update.
Our immediate ask is for the city to provide us with an extension to vacate until the end of the school year 2019.
What can you do to help us? We are requesting your support by attending the City Council meeting with us this coming Monday, December 16th at 7:00 P.M. We will petition the city for this extension. You can also email the Burien City Council at council@burienwa.gov and request that they let us finish the school year as we find a second home for Para Los Niños and our families.
