Para Los Niños de Highline is excited to announce the launch of our newly revised mission statement. This updated mission reflects the evolving scope of our work and our continued commitment to serving the Latin American community in King County.

For the past 20 years, we have focused on fostering academic success for every Latino student in South King County, but our impact extends far beyond the classroom. As we’ve grown and evolved, our old mission no longer encompassed the breadth of services we now provide. From our early childhood education programs and health initiatives to community leadership development and cultural celebrations, our work touches every aspect of the lives of our families.
Our programs—such as the Aprendamos Juntos family, a program where adults and school age children learning simultaneously, leadership academies, and after-school coding classes for highschoolers—encourage individuals and families to thrive academically, socially, and professionally. We center Latino culture, honor traditions, cultural art, and foster unity, while also offering opportunities for growth in a variety of areas, including leadership and digital literacy. Through our educational and holistic programs.
As we continue to build upon this foundation, we remain committed to the core values that drive us: love, respect, cultural pride, and the belief that every child has the potential to succeed. We look forward to further strengthening our role as a pillar of support for Latino families and continuing our work to create a thriving community.

Para Los Niños de Highline presenta su nueva declaración de misión para reflejar su creciente impacto
Para Los Niños de Highline se complace en anunciar el lanzamiento de su nueva declaración de misión. Esta misión actualizada refleja el progreso de nuestro trabajo y compromiso continuo de servir a la comunidad latinoamericana del Condado de King.
“La misión de Para Los Niños de Highline es apoyar el éxito de la comunidad latinoamericana mediante el desarrollo de habilidades de liderazgo, celebración de la diversidad, la promoción de la expresión artística y el cultivo de la curiosidad para toda la vida.“
Durante los últimos 20 años, nos hemos centrado en fomentar el éxito académico de cada estudiante latino en el sur del Condado de King, pero nuestro impacto va mucho más allá de las aulas. A medida que hemos crecido y transformado, nuestra antigua misión ya no abarca la gama de servicios que ofrecemos actualmente. Desde los programas de educación infantil temprana e iniciativas de salud hasta el desarrollo del liderazgo comunitario y las celebraciones culturales, impactamos en todos los aspectos de la vida de nuestras familias.

International Women’s Day is a recognition of the rights and achievements that women have attained through years of demonstrations and historical struggles. These struggles have had as their main objective equality in all areas of work, seeking to build a society without gender gaps and with a more solid democratic quality.
Thanks to these tireless struggles, today women occupy jobs that used to be exclusively for men. We can see women police officers, firefighters, construction and transportation workers, among many other professions.
In addition, there are numerous community programs dedicated to empowering women to grow professionally in key areas such as health, education, politics and economic growth.
This March 8, we celebrate International Women’s Day, remembering the past and looking to the future with the conviction that gender equality is an achievable goal.
Día Internacional de la Mujer, reafirmamos nuestro compromiso con la igualdad y la justicia.
El Día Internacional de la Mujer es un reconocimiento a los derechos y logros que las mujeres han alcanzado a través de años de manifestaciones y luchas históricas. Estas luchas han tenido como objetivo principal la igualdad en todos los ámbitos laborales, buscando construir una sociedad sin brechas de género y con una calidad democrática más sólida.
Gracias a estas incansables luchas, hoy en día las mujeres ocupan puestos de trabajo que antes eran exclusivamente para hombres. Podemos ver mujeres policías, bomberas, constructoras y transportistas, entre muchas otras profesiones.
Además, existen numerosos programas comunitarios dedicados a capacitar a las mujeres para que puedan crecer profesionalmente en áreas clave como la salud, la educación, la política y el crecimiento económico.
Este 8 de marzo, celebramos el Día Internacional de la Mujer, recordando el pasado y mirando hacia el futuro, con la convicción de que la igualdad de género es un objetivo alcanzable.

Longing for home is such a familiar theme for immigrants, and the members of Para Los Niños (PLN) are no exception. Against many odds, thousands of Latinx immigrant families crossed borders and walked unfamiliar streets to recreate a feeling of home in South King County. Yet now, in the face of attacks from the highest level of the U.S. government, our families have once again been made to feel anxious, unsafe, and insecure. They are once having to ask themselves, “Am I truly home?”
So when the unexpected opportunity arose in December for PLN to buy the downtown Burien building that houses our office, and secure this second home for so many of our families, we took it. Please join us in celebration – Para Los Niños is now a proud homeowner!
Like our PLN families who took great leaps of faith in deciding to migrate to this country, we took a significant step when our landlord, David Hawthorne, came to us at the end of the year with a generous offer. First, he proposed selling us the building at a fair price. Then, understanding the challenges of a small organization led by immigrant women, he made the purchase possible. Finally, community-minded realtor, Rodolfo Hernandez, represented us pro bono, supporting us in securing our permanent home with his experience and passion for the community.
In the next few months, PLN will be reaching out to you to ask for your help in raising the one million dollars needed to pay off the loan and make the minimal necessary upgrades to ensure our community’s home is comfortable, welcoming, and secure for the long haul.
Whatever your relationship to PLN – as a long time supporter or new donor, a parent leader or community partner, a program graduate or volunteer – there will be a role for you to play. We can do this together! We know this is a challenging time, and we believe this is a win we can bring to our community to let them know, you belong here! Help us build a lasting physical home that can compliment the sense of home home we have long provided to our community.
Para Los Niños crea un sentido de hogar más fuerte para las familias inmigrantes

El anhelo de volver a casa es un tema muy familiar para los inmigrantes, y para los participantes de Para Los Niños (PLN) no es la excepción. Contra todo pronóstico, miles de familias inmigrantes latinas cruzaron fronteras y caminaron por calles desconocidas para recrear un sentimiento de hogar en el sur del condado de King. Sin embargo, ahora, frente a los ataques del más alto nivel del gobierno de los EE. UU., nuestras familias han vuelto a sentirse ansiosas, inseguras y desprotegidas. Una vez tuvieron que preguntarse: “¿Estoy realmente en casa?”
Por eso, cuando en diciembre surgió la oportunidad inesperada de que PLN comprara el edificio en el centro de Burien, que alberga nuestra oficina y donde podemos asegurar este segundo hogar para nuestras familias, la aprovechamos. Únase a nosotros ala celebración: ¡Para Los Niños ahora es un orgulloso propietario!
Al igual que nuestras familias de PLN, que dieron grandes saltos de fe al decidir emigrar a este país, nosotros dimos un paso importante cuando nuestro propietario, David Hawthorne, se acercó a nosotros a finales de año con una oferta generosa. Primero, nos propuso vendernos el edificio a un precio justo. Luego, al comprender los desafíos de una pequeña organización dirigida por mujeres inmigrantes, hizo posible la compra. This February, we join together to commemorate Black History Month in the United States, a holiday that, since 1976, was officially extended by U.S. President Gerald Ford. This year, we celebrate the 99th anniversary of the first celebration, which began in 1915 as a week dedicated to recognizing and validating the contributions and achievements of this community in this country.
The initiative began with historian Dr. Carter Woodson, who sought to make visible the historical importance of people of African descent. He managed to have a week celebrated in honor of the achievements of the black community, coinciding with the birth of Abraham Lincoln in February.
The partnership created by Woodson was instrumental in getting several states, including North Carolina, Delaware, West Virginia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., to begin teaching the history and contributions of African Americans in public schools.
Today, more than ever, it is important to give voice to all communities of African descent, who continue to profoundly influence areas such as science, politics, academia, culture, sports, the arts and many more.
We recognize the achievements and struggles of the African American community, as well as their contributions to society that have countered the social inequalities, racism and discrimination they still face to this day.
We also recognize that Latin American peoples strive every day to validate, thank and recognize Afro-Latinos and their contributions. Let us continue on the path of unity and cultural recognition of our Afro-descendant peoples.
Celebremos el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana
Este mes de febrero, nos unimos para conmemorar el Mes de la Historia de la comunidad Negra en Estados Unidos, una festividad que, desde 1976, fue oficialmente extendida por el presidente de los Estados Unidos, Gerald Ford. Este año, celebramos el 99º aniversario de la primera celebración, que comenzó en 1915 como una semana dedicada a reconocer y validar las contribuciones y logros de la comunidad negra en este país.
La iniciativa comenzó con el historiador Dr. Carter Woodson, quien buscaba visibilizar la importancia histórica de los afrodescendientes. Consiguió que se celebrara una semana en honor a los logros de la comunidad negra, coincidiendo con el nacimiento de Abraham Lincoln en febrero.

Every January 19th, the federal celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. is held as a tribute to the life and legacy of one of the most influential leaders in the struggle for civil rights in the United States. His main work focused on the fight against racial discrimination and the defense of equal rights for all citizens.
Through his nonviolent activism, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings, King advocated peaceful resistance and civil disobedience as a means to bring about social change. This celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of the struggle for equality and social justice, and to inspire future generations to continue working towards a more just and equitable world for all.
Homenaje a Martin Luther King, Jr
Cada 19 de enero se lleva a cabo la celebración federal de Martín Luther King, Jr, como un homenaje a la vida y legado de uno de los líderes más influyentes en la lucha por los derechos civiles en Estados Unidos. Su principal labor se centró en la lucha contra la discriminación racial y la defensa de la igualdad de derechos para todos los ciudadanos. A través de su activismo no violento, inspirado en las enseñanzas de Mahatma Gandhi, King abogó por la resistencia pacífica y la desobediencia civil como medios para lograr el cambio social.
Esta celebración es una oportunidad para reflexionar sobre la importancia de la lucha por la igualdad y la justicia social, y para inspirar a las generaciones futuras a seguir trabajando hacia un mundo más justo y equitativo para todos.
On December 20th we gathered to share and celebrate the diligent hard work carried out during 2024 at PLN. The board of directors, the staff and the collaborators had fun amidst games, laughter, gratitude and good wishes, recognizing our work, to continue improving day by day and achieving our mission with the community.

Celebration and gift giving “Día de Reyes” (Three Kings Day)
The celebration of Three Kings’ Day in many Latin countries is celebrated in different ways. But as is now a tradition at PLN, on January 6th we delivered gifts to the children of the families that participate in our programs: Aprendamos Juntos, Play & Learn, Computer Classes, Latinx Youth Program and our Leadership Academy.
We want to express our deep gratitude to our friends at Counterforce Taekwondo Burien and Enviromech for being our “Kings” this year and collaborating once again in our now traditional Toy Drive, bringing smiles and fun to our participants.
The children not only had the opportunity to learn about the Three Kings festival, but also enjoyed the traditional Rosca de Reyes. According to the customs of some towns, whoever gets the Baby in their piece of rosca cake will have to organize bringing Tamales for the others on February 2nd, Candlemas Day. Both children and adults really enjoyed the activity.

Celebración y entrega de regalos “Día de Reyes”
La celebración del Día de Reyes en muchos países latinos se celebra de diferentes maneras. Pero como ya es tradición en PLN, el 6 de enero hicimos entrega de regalos a los niños de las familias que participan en nuestros programas: Aprendamos Juntos, Play & Learn, Clases de Computación, Latinx Youth Program y Academia de Liderazgo.
Queremos dar un profundo agradecimiento a nuestros amigos de Counterforce Taekwondo Burien y Enviromech por ser nuestros “Reyes” este año y colaborar una vez más en nuestro ya tradicional Toy Drive, entregando sonrisas y diversión a nuestros participantes.
Los niños no sólo tuvieron la oportunidad de aprender acerca de la fiesta de Reyes, sino que también disfrutaron de la tradicional Rosca de Reyes. De acuerdo a las costumbres de algunos pueblos, a quien le salga el Niño Jesús en su trozo de rosca, tendrá que organizar una cena para los demás el día 2 de febrero, Día de la Candelaria. Tanto niños como adultos disfrutaron mucho de la actividad. ¡Su apoyo es muy apreciado!

PLN once again partnered with The Highline Heritage Museum, City of Burien, BUrke Museum, El Rey 1360, Northwest Orchestra, Highline College Start Zone, Somos Mujeres Latinas, Southwest Youth and Family Services and other sister organizations to plan and host La Posada, a Mexican Christmas tradition. Almost 400 people attended this celebration where games, songs, food, incredible live performances, piñatas, candy, and much more were shared.
We enjoyed a magical night thanks to our community partnerships and volunteers. It was an honor to welcome so many little ones and their families to celebrate our culture together, through this significant Christmas tradition.
Entre Tradiciones y Arte en PLN
PLN colaboro una vez más con The Highline Heritage Museum, City of Burien, Burke museum, El Rey 1360, Orquesta northwest, Highline College Start Zone, Somos Mujeres Latinas, Southwest Youth and Family Services y otras organizaciones hermanas para planificar y organizar La Posada, una tradición navideña. Casi 400 personas atendieron a esta celebración donde estuvieron presentes los juegos, cantos, comida, increíbles presentaciones en vivo, piñatas, dulces, y mucho más.
Disfrutamos una noche mágica gracias a nuestras organizaciones y voluntarios. Fue un honor recibir a tantos pequeños y a sus familias para celebrar todos juntos una parte cultural, a través de esta tradición navideña.
A group of women participating in the different programs of Para Los Niños and the community at large met at Fulgencio Lazo’s art studio. Through a storytelling and drawing workshop they had the opportunity to explore, play and discover new artistic skills in a safe and fun space.

Un grupo de mujeres participantes de los diferentes programas de Para Los Niños y de la comunidad en general, se dieron cita en el estudio del artista Fulgencio Lazo y a través de un taller de narración y dibujo tuvieron la oportunidad de explorar, jugar y descubrir nuevas habilidades artísticas en un espacio seguro y divertido.

We at Para Los Niños de Highline want to thank you for supporting such a meaningful evening for us at ¡Celebración!, our Annual Gala on Saturday, November 16th. Together, as an organized and caring community, we raised the amount of $88,548 dollars in donations for our 7 programs we offer that work to holistically meet the needs of latino families in our community!
Para Los Niños de Highline’s mission is to foster the academic success of all Latino students through parent and community involvement. The funds raised at this event will be used to provide educational materials as well as increase staff development opportunities.
Our dynamic master of ceremonies Yohanna kept our program flowing with celebration and grace. We heard from powerful speakers from the latino community, such as Justice Mary Yu who was our keynote speaker, Monserrat Padilla, Emma Ossorio, Samantha Rosas our Board Chair and Virginia Herrera-Páramo our Executive Director. We enjoyed a diverse program, one of the highlights was the Mariachi Tesoro de Highline band led by David Aristizabal who played during our traditional Dessert Dash. The high schoolers from Highline Public Schools were a perfect addition to the evening.
Thank you once again for attending or in some way participating and for supporting our Latino children, youth, and families. We are grateful to have your support and look forward to continuing efforts for an equitable and thriving future for our community. We hope to see you at next year’s Gala!

October began and at Para los Niños we started our Programs for the 2024/2025 School Year. With a full registration and a lot of enthusiasm, more than 130 families from our Latino community of the Highline Public School District participating in the various activities that each of the programs has prepared for the children, youth and adults.
Continuing to build a stronger community, we have scheduled a series of workshops, talks and activities of general interest for the Latin community, taught by professionals and experts on various topics. We will be publishing the schedule of these events on the website and our social networks.
Registration for the Aprendamos Juntos, Jugando y Aprendiendo, Computing for Adults, Latin Youth, Programming and Chess Club programs remains open, with the possibility of being on the waiting list until a space becomes available.
Inicio de Programas Ciclo 2024/2025
Empezó octubre y en Para los Niños dimos inicio a nuestros Programas del ciclo 2024/2025. Con cupos llenos y mucho entusiasmo más de 130 familias de nuestra comunidad latina del Distrito Escolar de Highline, participan en las diversas actividades que cada uno de los programas tiene preparadas para niños, jóvenes y adultos.
Y para seguir construyendo una comunidad más fuerte, hemos programado una serie de talleres, charlas y actividades de interés general para la comunidad latina, impartidos por expertos y profesionales en los diversos temas. La programación de estos eventos la estaremos publicando en la página web y nuestras redes sociales.
Las inscripciones para los programas Aprendamos Juntos, Jugando y Aprendiendo, Computación para Adultos, Latin Youth Program, Club de Programación y Ajedrez, continúan abiertas, con la posibilidad de estar en la lista de espera hasta el momento que se libere un cupo.

With the participation of more than 100 children and youth from kindergarten to grade 12 belonging to the Highline School District, Para Los Niños completed its 2024 summer programs with great success.
Elementary and Middle School
The children participated in many sports, artistic, and concentration exercises through activities such as art, music, soccer, basketball, swimming, and cultural board games. They also visited the Pacific Science Center, the Zoo in Seattle WA and Sky Zone Trampoline Park, where they shared knowledge, experiences and a lot of fun.
For a month the children had the opportunity to make new friends and meet people from different Latin American countries. They managed to overcome their fears of playing in the pool for the first time, to problem-solve as part of a group, they discovered the world of music through singing and practicing with musical instruments and demonstrated their skills in the different sports they played. They did all this within a safe, dynamic and fun environment.
Thanks to the trust and participation of the parents of our community, the sponsors and philanthropists who made these programs possible, Para Los Niños de Highline completed its 2024 Summer Program with great success.
High Schoolers
In the month of July, youth from 9th to 12th grade immersed themselves in our Summer Program for Latinx Youth, where cultural exchange and fun were the protagonists.
In our efforts to promote and value Latin culture, young people let their imaginations run wild using air-drying clay to create art pieces related to their own culture. They went on a scavenger hunt at the Sea Mar Museum of Chicana/Latino Culture and learned new facts about different social movements that have happened over time.
They also had a lot of fun in the escape rooms, riding go-karts and on trampolines. They also practiced different sports with the guidance of UPower coaches. They improved their chess skills and built their own robots and demonstrated their efficiency and operation. To close, they had a gastronomic exchange where each participant brought a traditional dish which they shared with the group, allowing them to learn more about each other’s culture through food.
Fin del Programa de Verano 2024 en Para Los Niños de Highline
Con la participación de más de 100 niños y jóvenes desde kinder hasta grado 12 pertenecientes al Distrito Escolar de Highline, Para Los Niños finalizó con gran éxito sus programas de verano 2024.
Primaria y Secundaria
Los niños desarrollaron actividades deportivas, artísticas, y de concentración a través de actividades como arte, música, fútbol, basquetbol, natación y juegos culturales de mesa. Así mismo, visitaron el Pacific Science Center, el Zoológico en Seattle WA y Sky Zone Trampoline Park, donde compartieron conocimientos, experiencias y mucha diversión.
Durante un mes los niños tuvieron la oportunidad de hacer nuevas amistades y conocer a personas de diferentes países latinoamericanos. Lograron superar los miedos de jugar por primera vez en la piscina, a resolver problemas en grupo, descubrieron el mundo de la música a través del canto y de la práctica de instrumentos musicales y demostraron sus habilidades en los diferentes deportes que practicaron. Todo ésto dentro de un ambiente seguro, dinámico y divertido.
Gracias a la confianza y participación de los padres de nuestra comunidad, a los auspiciadores y filántropos que hicieron posible este programa, Para Los Niños finalizó con gran éxito su Programa de Verano 2024.
“High Schoolers”
En el mes de julio, los jóvenes de 9º a 12º grado se sumergieron en nuestro Programa de Verano para Jóvenes Latinx, donde el intercambio cultural y la diversión fueron protagonistas.
En nuestro empeño de promover y valorar la cultura latina, los jóvenes dejaron volar su imaginación utilizando arcilla de secado al aire, para crear piezas de arte relacionadas con su propia cultura. Hicieron una búsqueda del tesoro en el Museo Sea Mar de Cultura Chicana/Latina y aprendieron nuevos datos sobre los diferentes movimientos sociales que han sucedido a lo largo del tiempo.
También tuvieron mucha diversión en las salas de escape, los karts y los trampolines. Así mismo, practicaron diferentes deportes con la guía de los entrenadores de UPower. Mejoraron su conocimientos de ajedrez y construyeron sus propios robots e hicieron una demostración de su eficiencia y funcionamiento. Para el cierre, tuvieron un intercambio gastronómico donde cada participante trajo un plato tradicional que compartió con el grupo, permitiéndoles aprender más sobre la cultura de los demás a través de la comida.
Around 90 children are participating this year in our Summer Camp, enjoying different sports, arts, cultural activities and recreational outings. They will have music classes, art, pool days, outdoor activities and much more. July promises to be a month of integration, creativity, learning and above all, a lot of fun for all the children and collaborators.
The camp will be held at three locations: Hazel Valley Elementary School, Evergreen Community Aquatic Center and Lakeview Park Burien, where around 90 children will be enjoying lots of fun. At the end of this first week we will have the first excursion to the Woodland Park Zoo.
¡Iniciamos nuestro Campamento de Verano en Para los Niños!
Alrededor de 90 niños participan este año en el Campamento de Verano, disfrutando de diferentes actividades deportivas, artísticas, culturales y paseos recreativos. Tendrán clases de música, arte, días de piscina, actividades al aire libre y mucho más. Julio promete ser un mes de integración, creatividad, aprendizajes y sobre todo, mucha diversión para todos los niños y colaboradores.
El campamento se llevará a cabo en tres lugares: Hazel Valley Elementary School, Evergreen Community Aquatic Center y Lakeview Park Burien, en donde estarán alrededor de 90 niños disfrutando de mucha diversión. Al cierre de esta primera semana tendremos la primera excursión al Woodland Park Zoo.
On June 28, amidst great emotions, the graduation of the participants of the Para Los Niños 2024 Leadership Academy took place, a celebration for having successfully achieved their goal. Each participant shared a large part of their autobiography, sharing openly their human sensitivity. The purpose of this generation of leaders is to continue developing and practicing their skills at Para Los Niños de Highline, through continued participation and collaboration in our different programs.
Graduación Academia de Liderazgo 2024
El pasado 28 de junio se llevó a cabo la graduación de los participantes de la Academia de Liderazgo 2024 de Para Los Niños, en medio de grandes emociones por haber logrado concretar satisfactoriamente su objetivo. Cada participante compartió gran parte de su autobiografía, dejando al descubierto su sensibilidad humana. La finalidad de esta generación de líderes es continuar desarrollando y practicando sus habilidades en Para Los Niños, con su participación y colaboración continua en nuestros diferentes programas.
Las 9 participantes recibieron herramientas para identificar y construir sus fortalezas, para reconocer sus habilidades natas de liderazgo y poder desarrollarlas de manera personal y a favor de la comunidad, ya sea en un comité escolar, en su vecindario o en una organización, apoyando y creando cambios a nivel local o nacional.
We recently held graduation ceremonies with great pride and joy for each of our programs. More than 170 participants, including children, youth and adults, completed their classes for the 2023-2024 period: the High-Schoolers Programming Club and Internship programs, Computing for Adults, and Aprendamos Juntos (simultaneous education: English classes for adults taught by Highline College teachers in tandem with academic support for their children from 6 months to 13 years in a culturally competent environment).
We want to highlight the achievements of each of the graduates and the impact of our programs on families in the community, which focus on our common goal of fostering the academic success of every Latino student through parent and community involvement.
Every student who graduates from our programs is a mission accomplished at Para Los Niños de Highline. We are very proud of our adults, youth and children graduating in 2024!

Graduaciones en Para Los Niños de Highline
Recientemente realizamos las ceremonias de graduación de cada uno de nuestros programas con gran alegría y orgullo. Más de 170 participantes entre niños, jóvenes y adultos culminaron sus clases del periodo 2023-2024 en los programas de Aprendizaje Club de Programación y Pasantías (Internship) de los High-Schoolers, Computación para Adultos, y Aprendamos Juntos, compuesto por las clases simultáneas de inglés para adultos impartidas por maestros de Highline College y el soporte académico, en un ambiente culturalmente competente para sus hijos desde los 6 meses hasta los 13 años.
Queremos destacar los logros de cada uno de los graduados y el impacto de nuestros programas en las familias de la comunidad, que se enfocan en nuestro objetivo común: fomentar el éxito académico de cada estudiante latino a través de la participación de los padres y la comunidad.
Cada estudiante que se gradúa en nuestros programas es una misión cumplida en Para Los Niños de Highline. ¡Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestros adultos, jóvenes y niños graduados en 2024!
The young people participating in Para Los Niño’s Latinx Youth program, throughout the 2023-2024 cycle, learned different techniques to develop their creativity by making alebrijes, clay masks, calligraphy, and printing, among many other types of art. Thanks to the support and talent of the Mexican artist Amaranta Sandy, who with her teaching seeks the balance between creative space, urban life and family time.

Los jóvenes participantes en el programa Latinx Youth de Para Los Niños, a lo largo del ciclo 2023-2024, aprendieron diferentes técnicas para desarrollar su creatividad elaborando alebrijes, máscaras de barro, caligrafía e impresión, entre muchos otros tipos de arte. We express our gratitude to UPower for its collaboration with Para Los Niño in the Latinx Youth program during the period 2023-2024. Coaches Azul and Sam practiced different sports with the young people such as soccer, volleyball, hockey, batting and others. David Paez is a business administrator by profession, passionate about chess and mental games. “I believe in the importance of mental exercise in young people, which contributes a lot to their lives and develops different skills such as; makes decisions, analysis, concentration and memory, including the development of emotional intelligence”. For him it is a pleasure to be able to continue supporting young people in these activities
The Latinx Youth Program has been offering a chess club in which participants have been able to acquire new knowledge and polish their skills with the help of David Paez. He has been teaching the youth different chess skills. The game teaches kids patience as they work through different scenarios, learn to plan, course correct and wait to see how things play out, instead of being tempted by easy, more immediately gratifying moves.

El Programa Juvenil Latinx ha estado ofreciendo un club de ajedrez en el que los participantes han podido adquirir nuevos conocimientos y pulir sus habilidades con la ayuda de David Paez. El juego les enseña a los jóvenes a tener paciencia mientras trabajan en diferentes escenarios, aprenden a planificar, corregir el rumbo y esperar a ver cómo se desarrollan las cosas, en lugar de verse tentados por movimientos fáciles y más inmediatamente gratificantes.
We want to thank Richard Le for helping the youth in Latinx Program. He has been tutoring our youth and helps them with homework that ranges grades from 9th -12th and subjects such as math and history. When there is down time he also joins UNO games, Smash Bros competitions, Kahoot trivia along with other activities.

On May 31, the graduation of the young people who participated in the Para Los Niños Internship Program took place. This program ran from February to May of this year, with a total duration of 40 hours and with the participation of 10 young people from grades 11 and 12 belonging to the Highline School District.
Among the various activities in which the youth were involved, they helped in events and projects assigned by the staff of the different areas of Para Los Niños. They attended to different workshops given by specialists on finances, job interviews and creating professional resumes. Likewise, they visited other non-profit organizations to learn about their operation and participation in the community.
Through this program, the youth acquired knowledge and developed interpersonal, educational and leadership skills. They had direct, hands-on experience in a grassroots nonprofit organization, which provided them with the tools and techniques necessary to design and organize a community project.
Graduación Internship 2024
El pasado 31 de mayo se llevó a cabo la graduación de los jóvenes que participaron en el Programa de Internship de Para Los Niños. Este programa se desarrolló de febrero a mayo de este año, con una duración total de 40 horas y con la participación de 10 jóvenes de los grados 11 y 12 pertenecientes al Distrito Escolar de Highline.
Entre las diversas actividades en las que estuvieron involucrados los jóvenes, ayudaron en eventos y proyectos asignados por el personal de las distintas áreas de Para Los Niños. Asistieron a diferentes talleres impartidos por especialistas sobre finanzas, entrevistas de trabajo y elaboración de currículums profesionales. Así mismo, visitaron otras organizaciones sin fines de lucro para conocer su funcionamiento y participación en la comunidad.
A través de este programa, los jóvenes adquirieron conocimientos y desarrollaron habilidades interpersonales, educativas y de liderazgo. Tuvieron la experiencia directa y práctica en una organización de base sin fines de lucro, lo que les brindó las herramientas y técnicas necesarias para diseñar y organizar un proyecto comunitario.

Siempre en busca de informar a nuestras comunidades, es un placer compartir con ustedes un video que hemos creado para informar, motivar y brindar un acceso fácil a la información que ofrece el Departamento de Elecciones del Condado de King . Como parte del programa Creciendo en Comunidad, en PLN se han estado impartiendo diversos talleres para madres, padres, cuidadores de niños desde 0 a 5 años y mujeres embarazadas, en los cuales han aprendido diversas formas para que sus hijos puedan confiar en sí mismos, desarrollar las relaciones positivas desde temprana edad y diversas técnicas disciplina positiva, entre otros.
Estos talleres se han realizado en el Centro Comunitario y la Biblioteca de Burien, donde las familias latinas convivieron, aprendieron y practicaron estrategias efectivas para apoyar el desarrollo integral de sus hijos en las primeras etapas de la infancia, sentando las bases para un crecimiento emocional saludable, practicando actividades sociales y aprendizaje a través del juego.
LEARNING AND GROWING IN COMMUNITY
As part of the Creciendo en Comunidad program, PLN has been providing various workshops for mothers, fathers, caregivers of children ages 0 to 5 years old, and pregnant women, in which they have learned various ways to help their children gain self-confidence, develop positive relationships from an early age, as well as various positive discipline techniques, among other skills.
These workshops have been held at the Burien Community Center and Library, where Latino families fellowshipped together, learned and practiced effective strategies to support the integral development of their children in the early stages of childhood, laying the foundation for healthy emotional growth, practicing social activities and learning through play.
En Para los Niños se iniciaron las clases de zumba con la finalidad de bridar oportunidades a nuestra comunidad y desarrollar hábitos que contribuyan a mantener su bienestar físico a través de movimientos y pasos de los bailes latinos. Con esta nueva actividad los participantes hacen ejercicio, socializan y mejoran su estado de salud de una manera divertida. Estadísticamente, las enfermedades cardiovasculares, respiratorias, sobrepeso y diabetes tienen un alto impacto en la comunidad latina, y la práctica del ejercicio contribuye al bienestar general, mejora el estado de ánimo y disminuye el estrés cotidiano. Los participantes han demostrado gran interés y entusiasmo asistiendo a los centros comunitarios de Burien y Sea-Tac.
Staying Active and Healthy
At Para los Niños, zumba classes were started with the purpose of helping our community develop habits that contribute to maintaining their physical well-being through the movements and steps of Latin dances. With this new activity, participants exercise, socialize and improve their health in a fun way.
Statistically, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, overweight and diabetes have a high impact on the Latino community, and the practice of exercise contributes to general well-being, improves mood and reduces daily stress. Participants have shown great interest and enthusiasm by attending the Burien and Sea-Tac community centers.
Para Los Niños de Highline would like to sincerely thank Bevin Taylor for her service as Chair for more than three years. We want to acknowledge this transition within our organization as her guidance as chair has had such a meaningful impact, we are so happy she isn’t leaving us entirely yet. She has transitioned to the role of secretary and will continue to onboard Samantha Rosas, our new Chair. We are excited to grow with this first generation Mexican-American native to the Pacific Northwest. Her focus on race and ethnic studies will be an asset to fostering academic success for every Latino student through parent and community involvement. Samantha recognizes the power of each individual and she is passionate for the wellbeing of youth and BIPOC communities through an empathetic lens. She believes that sharing individual experiences is vital when it comes to learning how to best serve our communities. Bienvenida Sam.

Nueva presidenta de la Mesa Directiva de Para Los Niños de Highline
Para Los Niños de Highline desea agradecer sinceramente a Bevin Taylor por su servicio como presidenta durante más de tres años. Queremos reconocer esta transición dentro de nuestra organización, ya que su guía como presidenta ha tenido un impacto tan significativo, que estamos muy felices de que todavía no nos deje por completo. Ha hecho la transición al rol de secretaria, dando paso a Samantha Rosas, como nueva presidenta.
Estamos entusiasmados de crecer con esta primera generación mexicano-estadounidense nativa del noroeste del Pacífico. On Wednesday, February 7, a group of mothers who graduated from our Leadership Academy program at Para Los Niños de Highline was present at the Capitol of the city of Olympia Washington, in collaboration with the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Organization (WAISN, its acronym). in English).
Where we advocate for Immigrants and Refugees so that everyone regardless of their immigration status, the legislature’s budget or political priorities has Access to Medical Care when they need it. The other bill is Unemployment Benefits for Undocumented Workers (HB1095 ) /SB 5109) since there are more than 1.1 million immigrants in the state of Washington and regardless of their citizenship status, they are important members and therefore it is important that when they suffer the loss of employment for reasons beyond their control that they be able to access regular unemployment benefits and have financial protection.

Día Legislativo en Olympia
El día miércoles 7 de febrero un grupo de madres egresadas del programa Academia de Liderazgo y participantes de los programas de Para Los Niños, estuvimos en el Capitolio de la ciudad de Olympia, Washington en colaboración con la Organización Solidaridad de Inmigrantes en Washington (WAISN, por sus siglas en inglés).
En esta visita abogamos por los Inmigrantes y Refugiados para que toda persona tenga Acceso a Cuidado Médico cuando lo necesita, sin depender de su estado migratorio, del presupuesto de la legislatura o prioridades políticas,. El otro proyecto de ley son los Beneficios de Desempleo para Trabajadores Indocumentados (HB1095/SB 5109) . Existen más de 1.1 millones de inmigrantes en el estado de Washington y que independientemente de su status de ciudadanía, son miembros valiosos de nuestra comunidad; por esto es importante que cuando sufren la pérdida de empleo por razones fuera de su control, puedan acceder a los beneficios regulares de desempleo y tengan una protección financiera para ellos y sus familias.

In many Latin countries the generosity of the season and gifts to children is celebrated in many Hispanic and Latin countries as The Kings Day on January 6th. Our Aprendamos Juntos, Play & Learn, and Leadership Academy programs celebrated this traditional day on the 4th of January of this year. We want to thank Remitly and community members for becoming ‘Kings’ by sharing gifts with our Niños. Not only did the children have a chance to learn about our Three Kings Day tradition, they also got to enjoy the traditional Mexican Rosca de Reyes con chocolate, representative of the crown of one of the kings paired with “Xocolatl”, our Mesoamerican Cacao heritage. According to some traditions, whoever ends up eating the piece of bread that contains a small doll hidden in the pastry or sometimes an uncooked bean or a nut, will have to make Tamales for the same group on Feb 2nd, Candlemas Day. This year one of the students said he will bring Pupusas instead. Niños and adults had a wonderful time.

Este año el estudiante que le tocó muñeco dijo que traerá Pupusas a cambio. Niños y adultos se lo pasaron de maravilla.

We’re so excited to announce our keynote speaker for the evening—Dr. Ivan Duran! Ivan has served over 30 years in public education, most recently as the Chief of Acceleration and Recovery for the Renton School District. He previously served as superintendent for the Bellevue School District. As superintendent, Dr. Duran led with a focus on racial equity and inclusion, creating systems to support academic, social-emotional, and behavior development for all students.

Aprendamos Juntos Program
Aprendamos Juntos Program is a multigenerational After School program. Adults from the English classes and children 6 months to 8th grade graduated. We love to celebrate life milestones!
One after another the families arrived, hurrying to the buffet table to set down their offerings: empanadas, pupusas, chicken tinga, choco flan, and fanciful jello molds. For many, La Clausura – the closing ceremony – of the Aprendamos Juntos family learning program felt like a return to normalcy.
After two years of remote learning, job loss, quarantine, and anxiety, families could finally celebrate face-to-face, share food, and enjoy the creative performances of their children and dedicated teachers. Dressed in traditional clothing from the diferent states from Mexico, one classroom offered a tightly choreographed dance.
Another drew a round of boisterous applause as their paper maché volcanoes erupted in colorful smoke. But for many, the puppet show where colorful animal cutouts danced across the stage as participants sang a spirited Mexican children’s song stole the show.
Youth Programming Club

Early Learning Graduation
Early Learning is our program for children 3 to 5 year olds. Where parents and children meet to positively emphasize interpersonal relationships through play. We also collaborated with Zeno to introduce early learning in math through fun exercises with games.
Adults Computer Lab
This Learning Lab for parents was created with the aim to gain technology skills and reduce the barriers to technology access. Families are gaining skills to become comfortable and competent in navigating school programs, checking email, applying for jobs, doing basic research, and assisting children with homework assignments.

While Black History Month is celebrated officially throughout February, it should be an every-day effort to uplift Black voices and celebrate Black stories. It’s also important to acknowledge that both the United States and Latin America have a history of overlooking the achievements of Black folks.
We typically associate Black History Month with African-Americans. Since this is commonly the case, what does Black History have to do with the Latinx community? There is a tendency to view “black” and “Latinx” as separate entities, as if they have nothing to do with each other. However, there are significant populations of Latinxs throughout the countries of Latin America who are of African descent. These African- descended Latinxs are commonly referred to or self-identify, primarily in the U.S., as “Afro-Latinxs”.
With that said, what do African-Americans and Afro-Latinxs have in common? We are black! Yet there is not nearly enough mention of the Afro-Latinx experience in the U.S. during this commemorative month. Looking back into our history, African-Americans and Afro-Latinxs share a common lineage. The conversation about the history of the transatlantic slave trade and the experience of enslaved people is typically focused on those who came to the U.S., especially in the South. However, only approximately 400,000 out of the 10.7 million of enslaved Africans who survived the Middle Passage came to the U.S. over the course of the transatlantic slave trade. Thus, the majority of the Africans who survived the voyage to the Americas arrived in the Caribbean and Latin America.
The Africans who arrived in the U.S. and Latin America left a significant impact on the African-American, Afro-Latinx, and broader communities. Their descendants continue to preserve, shape and maintain the influence left behind by their ancestors. From the music to the food, from literature and the arts to religion, there is a notable African presence that exists in both cultures.

Si bien el Mes de la Historia Afro-Americana se celebra oficialmente en febrero, debería ser un esfuerzo diario para elevar las voces negras y celebrar las historias Afroamericanas. También es importante reconocer que tanto los Estados Unidos como América Latina historicamente han dejado pasar por alto los logros de las comunidades negras.
Por lo general, asociamos el Mes de la Historia de las comunidades negras con los afroamericanos. Dado que este suele ser el caso, ¿qué tiene que ver Black History con la comunidad Latinx? We are celebrating! Our Aprendamos Juntos program has a new partnership with Glacier Middle School. We thank the principal, Vicki Fisher, and Highline Public Schools for allowing us to have our program on their premises.
The Aprendamos Juntos program integrates the simultaneous learning of children and parents to drive academic success, children’s emotional development, and support parenting. This program consists of two weekly sessions during the school year, where participants are divided into six groups: early age, pre-kindergarten, elementary and middle school children and parents in English classes of level one and two, with teachers from Highline College, an institution that has supported us for more than 18 years with teachers specialized in learning the English language.

When parent leaders at Para Los Niños recommended that we start a Promotoras de Salud (community health outreach worker) project to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were all in. We had already been sponsoring vaccine clinics and resource tables, but we needed the capacity to reach deeper into our community to counter the misinformation about the virus and the vaccine. From August to November, 2021, six Latina PLN members (including three Leadership Academy graduates), participated in 20 hours of training to reach deep into the South King County Latino community with COVID-19 prevention resources, accurate vaccine information, and more.
Adult English Class Writing Project: Our Cultural Traditions and Family Memories In the introduction to the bilingual children’s book, Family Pictures, writer Sandra Cisneros says, “They say every picture tells a story. But the pictures of Carmen Lomas Garza tell many, many stories.” When the Level 2 adult English students in our Aprendamos Juntos (We Learn Together) family education program opened their copies of Lomas Garza’s book and were asked, “Which picture reminds you of home and why?,” they had stories to tell. Her evocative paintings sparked memories of visiting the local fair in Oaxaca, spending a lazy Sunday afternoon on a beach south of Acapulco, or picking oranges at a grandparents’ house in rural Honduras.
The class used the vignettes in Family Pictures as a jumping off point for telling and writing their own stories.

The Museum’s annual La Posada event aims to change that!

In response to the question, “What cultural tradition or family memory do you want to share with your children?” someadult learners wrote about traditions spread wide across Latin America, like Dia de los Muertos or Las Posadas, while others described cultural celebrations specific to a region, like the beautiful La Rama celebration of Veracruz, in which children find and decorate a branch, then travel from home to home playing music and singing in exchange for small gifts of cash. Still others wrote about personal family traditions, such as the grandparents’ birthdays which fell only a day apart each December, giving the student’s family a reason to throw an annual party lasting two whole days!

Cuando los padres líderes en Para Los Niños recomendaron que iniciemos un proyecto de Promotoras de Salud (Trabajadoras de Salud Comunitaria) para responder a la pandemia de COVID-19, todos estábamos de acuerdo. Ya habíamos estado patrocinando clínicas de vacunas y mesas de recursos, pero necesitábamos la capacidad de profundizar en nuestra comunidad para contrarrestar la desinformación sobre el virus y la vacuna. When parent leaders at Para Los Niños recommended that we start a Promotoras de Salud (community health outreach worker) project to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were all in. We had already been sponsoring vaccine clinics and resource tables, but we needed the capacity to reach deeper into our community to counter the misinformation about the virus and the vaccine. From August to November, 2021, six Latina PLN members (including three Leadership Academy graduates), participated in 20 hours of training to reach deep into the South King County Latino community with COVID-19 prevention resources, accurate vaccine information, and more.
Promotoras de Salud is a Latin American community health education model that has been successfully adopted in communities across the United States. The model centers the lived experiences of lay educators – primarily women – to connect with Spanish speaking communities often neglected by mainstream health care providers. PLN partnered with the King County Health Department and the King County Promotores Network to design and lead four training sessions with topics ranging from COVID19 vaccine and testing basics to visible and invisible manifestations of culture.
The sessions on community leadership models and definitions of racial equity were popular with participants. One new promotora pointed to “the opportunity to share experiences to better understand the concepts (of racial equity)” as a personal highlight, while another praised the participatory training methods for increasing her confidence and knowledge of her new role.
As the Omicron variant has begun to spread, PLN is grateful we can support our six trusted and trained promotoras de salud to meet our Latino families where they are at to stop the spread of COVID19 in our community.

Para Los Niños and UW Work with Parents
Para Los Niños has partnered with the University of Washington to “promote young children’s ability to self-regulate through parenting strategies that contribute to children’s positive development.” This is done through a parenting program called SEACAP: Social, Emotional, and Academic Competence for Children and Parents. Para Los Niños is one of the first organizations to use this program virtually with parents from our programs. Throughout six sessions, parents will gain skills to manage their own stress and emotions to continue supporting their children. With positive affirmations and tips on how to be present, we are providing essential tools to parents. At the end of every session, they receive resources and information from local lawyers surround important topics that affect the Latinx community such as immigration rights, accessibility in the education system, and more.

Meanwhile, in the United States, a celebration honoring the achievements of women that began as a week-long event in 1982 evolved into a month-long celebration just five years after it began thanks to The National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA).
El Día Internacional de la Mujer tuvo lugar por primera vez en la ciudad de Nueva York en 1908 cuando miles de mujeres se reunieron para marchar por mejores leyes y el derecho al voto. No sería hasta 1975, 67 años después, que el día sería oficialmente reconocido y celebrado.

On February 4th, we invited members of our community to meet with Para Los Niños staff and learn more about the programs we offer. We connected with over 100 attendees on Zoom and held break-out sessions to get more feedback about what they would like to see. We are hoping to host more of these sessions in a virtual capacity to maintain the sense of community we are known for. Gracias to all who participated!
Virtual Classes
Our Aprendamos Juntos program for 1st to 3rd grade, 4th to 6th, and 7th to 8th grade continues to focus on the educational needs of the students. Our other programs, such as the adult English classes and Play and Learn also continue virtually.
Our virtual computer classes began this past week. Our Computer Lab Assistant is working directly with the community to build classes based on what participants need to address the great inequities in technology access for the Latino community.

While Black History Month is celebrated officially throughout February, it should be an every-day effort to uplift Black voices and celebrate Black stories. It’s also important to acknowledge that both the United States and Latin America have a history of overlooking the achievements of Black folks. Because of this, we will be highlighting stories of some prominent Afro-Latinx figures. But first, it’s we go back to the beginning and learn about the start of what is now known as Black History Month.
The story of Black History Month begins back in 1915 thanks in part to a man named Carter G. Woodson. That year, Dr. Woodson, a history professor helped establish the group that is now called the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History (ASALH) to study Black culture and history and promote the accomplishment and studies of Black folks.
The Northwest African American Museum* is a great resource located in Downtown Seattle and has programming throughout the year to further educate people about Black history. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they have shifted to virtual programming — visit their website to learn more about their programs.
*At the time of this writing this, February 2021, the museum is closed due to COVID-19.

Si bien el Mes de la Historia Afro-Americana se celebra oficialmente en febrero, debería ser un esfuerzo diario para elevar las voces negras y celebrar las historias Afroamericanas. Wrapping up 2020
We ended the year by providing the families registered in our programs with presents for the holidays thanks to Tres Lecheria, Colores Spanish Immersion Pre-School, and Imperial Court of Seattle and the Olympic and Rainier Empire. Additionally, to fight the technological inequities seen within our community, and thanks to King County, we distributed 119 laptop to adults and provided them with tutorials to learn how to navigate the ever-changing virtual landscape.
Where we’re going in 2021
Our Latinx Youth Program will be providing a limited number of internships in 2021 to assist students with their desired skills and objectives to best prepare them for their post-high school plan. Play & Learn and Aprendamos Juntos (Let’s Learn Together) has continued virtually, while Academia de Liderazgo (Leadership Academy) is beginning its virtual meetings to provide leadership development to our adult community members. Next month, there will be a networking event for participants and the Para Los Niños staff. Our Computer Lab will resume its classes soon. Plus, now’s the best time to become a part of our monthly giving program, Madrinas and Padrinos, as our donor appreciation program is launching this year.

Today, and every day, we honor the life and legacy of civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. He was born on January 15, 1929 but it is celebrated as a federal holiday every third Monday in January.
Martin Luther King, Jr., dedicated his life to fighting racism and achieving racial equality and justice for African Americans. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his work.
In 1963, King was arrested in Birmingham, Alabama after several days boycotts, sit-ins, and marches to protest racial injustices. There, he penned his famous letter, “A Letter from Birmingham Jail,” where he said, “One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” Two years later, he and his wife, Coretta Scott King, led thousands of demonstrators from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery — a historic 54-mile march. That same year, in 1963, he led the March on Washington where he delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. In 1968, King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.
We honor Martin Luther King, Jr’s life and legacy by continuing to fight for racial equality and bringing to light the systemic inequities seen in our communities. We must do the work by reflecting the ways in which we, as individuals and community, participate in the perpetuation of negative views against Black people, who are also part of our Black Latinx community. Let’s work on making our community a safer and inclusive place for everyone regardless of skin color.

This year, we were able to assist the families registered in our programs by providing toys to their children between the ages of 6 months to 18 years old. Now, more than ever, it’s important for children to have toys to keep their spirits high as we continue to navigate these unprecedented times.
The Tres Lecheria has partnered with Para Los Niños for several years to host a toy drive for our families. While this was ISCSORE’s and Colors Spanish Immersion Pre-School’s first year participating, we are grateful for their support.
Este año, pudimos ayudar a las familias registradas en nuestros programas proporcionando juguetes a sus hijos que tienen 6 meses a 18 años. Ahora, más que nunca, es importante que los niños tengan juguetes para mantener el ánimo mientras continuamos adaptándonos en estos tiempos difíciles.

Para Los Niños is proud to announce that we will be offering computer classes to the community.
These classes will start will cover topics depending on what each person needs. Attendees can ask any questions or concerns they have surrounding technology.
Our Computer Lab assistant, Citlaly will be covering topics from how to send an email, create an email, navigate any video conference platforms, troubleshooting, and more.
There are limited spots for these classes as they will take place in person. We will be following social distancing procedures to ensure the safety of the community and our staff.

Para Los Niños is excited to have partnered with Highline Heritage Museum and the City of Burien to create the Latinx Art Exhibition.
The exhibition showcases art from youth in the Highline area. The museum is not open to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions but the art will be on a window display on 152nd street until the end of November.

Para Los Niños is excited to announce out virtual gala,“Floreciendo,” on November 20, 2020 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM via Zoom. For the safety of our staff and our community, we are hosting our annual fundraiser online. While it may look different from previous years, with your support, we can create that same sense of community that has continually inspired and engaged people from all over King County.
As you know, Para Los Niños is a grassroots organization dedicated to uplifting the Latino community in South King County. Since 2003, we have worked with over 14,000 people.
We invite you to engage with the important work we do and stand with us to support our 17-year long history of transforming communities and creating academic success for every Latino student.
This year, thanks to the support of organizations around King County, we have been able to assist over 1,500 households with either full or partial rent, food assistance, and provide families with school and art supplies, as well as facial masks and cultural educational activities.
With your support, we can continue to adapt to what our families and community needs. By attending, you will be taking an active role in supporting our mission and vision by committing to build the same sense of community from our previous galas.
Your commitment is important to us as we navigate these difficult times and work to build that same sense of community that brings us together every year.
Our Early Bird tickets are $7 per individual registration will be available until 10/16.

To continue the spirit of our summer programs, Descubriendo Nuestra Cultura (Discovering Our Culture) and Alrededor del Mundo (Around the World), Para Los Niños held a Summer Resource Fair for our community in front of our new office in downtown Burien.
There was music, tacos, and giveaways for the whole family.

Para continuar con el espíritu de nuestros programas de verano, Descubriendo Nuestra Cultura y Alrededor del Mundo, Para Los Niños organizó una Feria de Recursos de Verano para nuestra comunidad frente a nuestra nueva oficina en el centro de Burien.

PLN Summer Resource Fair: Come meet our staff and pick up resources for the coming school year on Wednesday, August 19th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
It may look different from our previous summer events but the spirit of our programs, Descubriendo Nuestra Cultura (Discovering Our Culture) and Alrededor del Mundo (Around the World) continues. Para Los Niños has partnered with the Highline Heritage Museum to give our youth an opportunity to showcase their art. Submitted works will be on display at the museum throughout the month of October. Space is limited. Please submit your art in a timely manner.
Kids and youth in grades K-12 are encouraged to submit any piece of art or poem they have to our offices.
Guidelines: 1. Art must not be bigger than 16 inches x 20 inches. 2. Poems should not be longer than 200 words. 3. Work depicting violence or hate speech will not be accepted. 4. Suggested theme: “2020: Tu Año/Your Year” 5. You must register before visiting our offices.

Para Los Niños, en colaboración con Highline Heritage Museum y la Ciudad de Burien queremos dar la oportunidad a nuestros jóvenes de exhibir su arte. Las obras presentadas se exhibirán en el museo durante todo el mes de octubre. El espacio es limitado. Por favor envíe su arte de manera oportuna.

Para Los Niños has been working to provide our Latinx community of Highline with resources to better manage this pandemic. One of the projects we are working on is Feeding El Pueblo, a community food drive.
We have partnered with La Roxay Productions, the Southwest Youth and Family Services, Colectiva Legal del Pueblo, and Lake Burien Presbyterian Church, to bring culturally relevant foods to the community.
The food drive is continuing to take donations every Monday through August 31st at Lake Burien Presbyterian Church from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The food items should be non-perishable items that do not require refrigeration. Click to view the food list.
If you prefer to donate monetary funds, you can visit the GoFundMe page for Feeding El Pueblo. Funds will go towards purchasing additional food items for our community and to give gift cards for grocery purchases.

Alimentando Al Pueblo: una campaña comunitaria de comida
Para Los Niños ha estado trabajando para proporcionar a nuestra comunidad latinx del area de Highline recursos accesibles durante esta pandemia.
Uno de los proyectos en los que estamos trabajando es Alimentando Al Pueblo, una campaña comunitaria de alimentos culturalmente relevantes.
En colaboración con La Roxay Productions, Southwest Youth Family Services, Colectiva Legal del Pueblo y la Iglesia Lake Burien Presbyterian, estamos recolectando alimentos culturalmente relevantes para la comunidad.
“La comida siempre ha sido el puente que une a nuestra comunidad. Es parte de nuestra identidad y la capacidad de tener alimentos culturalmente relevantes disponibles para nuestra comunidad es parte del proceso de sanación y recuperación durante esta pandemia,” dijo la directora ejecutiva de PLN, Virginia Herrera-Páramo.
La campaña de alimentos continúa recibiendo donaciones todos los lunes hasta el 31 de agosto en la Iglesia Presbiteriana Lake Burien desde las 11:00 AM hasta 2:00 PM. Para Los Niños mobilizes the Latinx community of Highline by providing them with resources. One of these is offering English Language classes to help parents develop the skills and motivation for community involvement.
When schools began to close in March due to the pandemic, the adult English classes moved online. Despite the added stressors that followed the closure of the state, our adult learners persisted.

We had over 40 members of our community complete the spring semester of PLN’s Beginning and Intermediate/Advanced English class.
This could not have been possible without our long-time partners, Professor Kristyn Joy, and Highline College and new partner Professor Daphne Cuizon. Professor Joy’s passion and determination inspires the community and we could not be more thankful.

Para Los Niños se propone movilizar a la comunidad latina de Highline proporcionándoles recursos. Una de ellas es ofrecer clases de inglés para ayudar a los padres a desarrollar las habilidades y la motivación para la participación comunitaria.
Cuando las escuelas comenzaron a cerrar en marzo debido a la pandemia, las clases de inglés para adultos se trasladaron ‘online.’ A pesar de los estresores adicionales que siguieron al cierre del estado, nuestros estudiantes adultos persistieron.
Tuvimos más de 40 miembros de nuestra comunidad que completaron el semestre de primavera de la clase de inglés principiante e intermedio / avanzado de PLN.
Esto no hubiera sido posible sin la colaboracion de la profesora Kristyn Joy, la profesora Daphne Cuizon y Highline College. La pasión y determinación de la profesora Joy inspira a la comunidad. Nos sentimos muy agradecidos.
